1 Topic: Light Q and A You are going to write this in Cornell note form. Qs on the left and answers on the right. When each Q is displayed on the screen you will discuss what you think the answer is for the Q. Be ready to explain what you think it is and why because the teacher will pick a group at random to hear what you think! 12 QUESTIONS TOTAL

2 Light Q and A You are going to write this in Cornell note form. Qs on the left and answers on the right. 12 QUESTIONS TOTAL

3 What is the source of almost all energy on Earth? Why do you think this?

4 THE SUN! We need the sun for food/photosynthesis, which means no sun, no food. No food, no life!

5 Draw and label the wave below
2.) What are the properties of this wave? Draw and label the wave below

6 Draw and label the wave below
1. Wavelength 2. Crest 3. Amplitude 4. Trough Draw and label the wave below

7 3.) What are the parts of the eye and how do they let us see?

8 3.) Light waves enter the eye through the protective cornea (#2), the colored part of the eye known as the iris (#1) shrinks or expands to let the correct amount of light into the eye. Light enters through the hole in the Iris called the pupil (#3). The light goes through the pupil then the lens, which focuses the image and projects it upside-down on to the back of the eye called the retina (#4). The retina contains cells that are called rods and cones, which detect shadow and color. The optic nerve (#5) then detects the signals from the retina and sends messages to your brain.

9 4.) What happens when light disperses? OR What is dispersion?

10 4.) As seen below: Light dispersion is when light waves spread farther apart the further they travel. The light becomes less concentrated.

11 5.) Why is it so much warmer near the equator than at the North and South Pole?

12 5.) Why is it so much warmer near the equator than at the North and South Pole?
The sun light hits the Earth at different angles, which causes dispersion. The more the direct sunlight the hotter and more intense and focused the light is.

13 6.) What is refraction?

14     Light Bends SEE! 6.) Refraction is the bending of light as it enters a new medium. Draw this=>

15 7.) WHY DOES LIGHT SLOW DOWN IN A DIFFERENT MEDIUM?
(as seen during refraction)

16 7.) WHY DOES LIGHT SLOW DOWN????
Each time the photons (light particles) bump into a particle of the medium, the light gets absorbed or reflected, which changes the speed. When the light changes mediums this process is a different speed.

17 8.) What phase of matter does the light move the fastest through?

18 8.) Light Moves Faster Light Moves Slower

19 9.) You see the light almost instantly, but you don’t hear the thunder until seconds later. Why?

20 9.) Light moves faster than sound!

21 10.) How can you see yourself in a mirror?

22 10.) Light shines on objects and reflects (bounces) directly off of them.

23 11.) Why is this reflection distorted?

24 11. ) Waves travel in all directions
11.) Waves travel in all directions. When they reflect off of a surface that isn’t smooth the light bounces and scatters in many directions.

25 12.) What is the ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM?

26 12.) What is the ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION?
It is a variety of radiation including radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays, and, in which electric and magnetic fields vary simultaneously. Gamma Rays have a higher frequency, thus the most energy. Radio waves have the lowest frequency, thus least energy.
