City life drastically changed Many unable to pay rent/mortgage, bills. Massive evictions. Shantytowns/Hoovervilles Soup Kitchens and bread lines. The farmers get… Loosing land. Growing debt. The Dust Bowl Famine

2 Family Entertainment changed drastically
Financial strain led to broken families. Men searched for work, EVERYWHERE. Lacking direct relief could not supplement working income. Women and children were left to fend for themselves. Schools closed Poverty brought with it psychological depression. Increased suicide. Decreased health care. Defining a generation.

3 Hoover Believed in the ability of American enterprise.
Hands off approach. Rugged Individualism – success through hard work. Worked with labor unions and industrialists A shift in congress. Boulder Dam?...

4 Federal Programs Hoover
Building roads, dams, and other large projects, $800 million. Federal Home Loan Bank Act Reconstruction Finance Corporation, up to $2 billion. Army Bonus Bill in congress opposed by Hoover. No direct relief, failed bill, damaged reputation, angry “army.”

5 Bonus March Botched WWI veterans seeking additional funds to help with depression relief. Patman Bill gave about $500 per soldier. It would be given, but when… Hoover opposed the bill. Bill failed. Army stayed, Hoover ordered them out. Gassed the Army, 2 shot, many injured, Hoover signed his fate.
