1 The Colonists React Colonists did not protest the Stamp Act with words alone They organized a boycott (refusal to buy certain products or services as a protest) The Sons of Liberty helped enforce the boycott

2 Since the boycott was successful against the Stamp Act, Congress again agreed to stop importing all British goods Colonial women pledged to weave their own cloth rather than have cloth made in England Many colonists also boycotted British tea

REMEMBER: This cartoon was created by Benjamin Franklin during the beginning stages of the French and Indian War Has the idea of this cartoon changed since we last saw it? In reaction to the various acts created by the British, the American colonists knew that only by joining together would they be able to survive…

4 The resistance to British rule in the colonies soon mounted,
leading to war... The Boston Massacre (March 5, 1770) British redcoats (soldiers) killed 5 anti-British demonstrators (colonists) It was the result of tensions in the American colonies that had been growing since the British Parliament enforced the Townshend Acts in 1767

5 The Boston Massacre England’s failure to remove the army from Boston heightened English-American tensions: Colonists resented the presence of this standing army In 1770, British soldiers fired into a crowd of colonists This “Boston Massacre” revealed the deterioration of English- American relations 11

What do you see happening in this picture? IMAGE ANALYSIS

7 Paul Revere’s etching of the Boston Massacre became an American best-seller
Colonists injured British soldiers by throwing snowballs & oyster shells With only 4 dead, this was hardly a “massacre” but it reveals the power of colonial propaganda 11

8 Response to the Boston Massacre
Soon after the massacre, Parliament canceled the Townshend Acts They kept only the tax on tea as a remind of their power and authority Most colonists hope the conflict with Parliament had passed, but there was more to come…

9 A MAJOR protest takes place...
In 1773, Parliament passed the Tea Act in order to help the British East India Company by making its tea cheaper to colonial buyers: Americans interpreted this act as a subtle plan to get them to buy taxed tea In Dec 1773, Boston protestors dumped a shipment of British tea into Boston harbor… The Boston Tea Party (December 16, 1773) 13

10 The Intolerable Acts were then passed in 1774, they were a punishment for the Boston Tea Party.
As a result, the British… 1. closed the port of Boston 2. told the colonists they couldn’t hold town meetings 3. re-enacted the Quartering Act 4. British officials were tried in Britain, not the colonies
