1 SAMPLE SLIDE What is a railway?
A railway is a track with rails that vehicles move along. 2,000 years ago the Greeks and Romans used wagon ways with tracks to move loaded wagons pulled by animals. The stone cut tracks guided vehicles along so that the wheels stayed on the track. The wagon ways were simple but effective. SAMPLE SLIDE Random Slides From This PowerPoint Show

2 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
During Queen Victoria’s long reign, roads had improved thanks to John McAdam’s new hard surface. More and more canals had opened so that barges could carry goods to more and more parts of the country. Random Slides From This PowerPoint Show SAMPLE SLIDE Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The next step was to replace the horses that hauled the coal wagons with something that would go faster and something that would be able to move much heavier and larger loads.

3 New machines that were powered by steam could do many of the jobs that people used to do at home.
SAMPLE SLIDE You can see how powerful steam can be if you’ve ever watched steam lifting the lid of a saucepan or a boiling kettle. Coal was burned so that the heat from the burning coal heated water to make steam which powered the machines. This meant that the power of steam made it easier and quicker to produce more and more goods. As a result, lots of new factories were built. Random Slides From This PowerPoint Show

4 In 1769, James Watt, a Scottish inventor, invented an even more efficient steam engine to pump water from coal mines. He continued to experiment with the use of steam and discovered that steam could be used to power many different types of machinery. SAMPLE SLIDE Random Slides From This PowerPoint Show

5 Sadly the locomotive only made three journeys because the weight of the locomotive kept on breaking the cast iron rails it ran on. SAMPLE SLIDE The owner of the ironworks (who had been paying Trevithick money in the hope that he’d invent something useful) was very disappointed. He came to the conclusion that Trevithick’s invention wasn’t likely to reduce his transport costs and so the project was abandoned. Random Slides From This PowerPoint Show
