1 Sign test/forensic mini mock

2 Finish going through research methods exam

3 Sign test A statistical test used to analyse the direction of differences of scores between the same or matched pairs of subjects under two experimental conditions

4 Task: to think of a rhyme for the sign test
Sign test: Criteria Whether there is a difference predicted between two scores The data is related i.e. is a repeated measures design? (You can also use a matched pairs design because the participants are paired and therefore count as one person tested twice). If it is nominal data (but we often turn data into nominal data as in the example below). Task: to think of a rhyme for the sign test

5 Page 12: Sign test step one
Convert the data into nominal data by working out which participants produced a higher word count after the energy drink and which produced a lower word count. We do this by subtracting the score for water from the score for energy drink. If the answer is negative we simply record this sign, if the answer is positive we record the plus sign. If there is no difference then we just miss out that score and that participant.

6 Sign test: step two Next add up all the pluses and minuses.
So for our data we have _____+ and 7 ____ pluses (____) = participants who spoke more words after drinking the energy drink than the water minuses (___) = amount of participants who spoke more words after the water.

7 Sign test: step three The calculated or observed value is called S and it is the one with the fewest scores: S=___

8 Sign test: step four We have to compare our answer (calculated value) with the critical value to see if our results are significance. The value of n is 19 (because one value is ignored as there was no difference) It is a non-directional or two tailed test Level of significance is p ≤0.05 So the critical value is _____ Now look at the top of the sign test critical value to table to see if your observed value needs to be bigger or smaller that the critical value. It states that the value of S must be equal to or less (≤) than the critical value to be significant. S=7 critical value= 4 As 7 >4 (more than the critical value) then result is NOT significant. Accept the null hypothesis

Practice questions Complete the following questions in your booklet 23-26

11 Forensic mini mock

12 Forensic paragraph Task: identify three things that could improve the answer? Twin studies can be conducted to investigate the biological explanation. However although MZ twins share 100% of their genes, they also share the same environment and upbringing. This makes it difficult to determine if these behaviours are caused by nature or nurture.

13 Forensic paragraph Task: identify three things that need to change to get this to a top band evaluation? A difference between these two approaches is that the psychodynamic approach takes a more psychic determinism view where Kohlberg looks more at stage theory. However they are both similar as they give an explanation as to why someone offends.

14 General feedback Do not spend too much time on your description
MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE RESEARCH!!!! At least 3x pieces Structure your essay: include paragraphs DO NOT BE VAGUE… make sure you are including enough detail in the points you make. DO NOT BE WOOLY…. BE SPECIFC ABOUT THE POINT YOU ARE MAKING. Are you answering the question? Are you using the correct terminology?

15 A01: How much should I write?
To get the full 6 AO1 marks, 200 words You may be able to write more than this in 7 minutes, but 200 words is enough to write. If you are writing about two theories, do you have to write an equal amount about each? No. AQA are clear that you can have more (say two thirds) on one theory and one third on the other. Do think about this before you begin to write you answer since it vital that you only spend 7 minutes on AO1

16 A03: Evaluation - Issues and debates
Evaluation is anything that is relevant to both the AO1 and the question being asked. How important is wider evaluation? Really important. Your answers are unlikely to score high marks unless they include good evaluation. The evaluation is your chance to shine and to show off how good your understanding of the AO1 really is. How long should I spend on it in the exam? 13 minutes per essay, so aim for around 400 words

17 A03 evaluation: What exactly should I write about?
So long as what you write is relevant to the AO1 and the question you really can write anything. Suggestions include: An application of the theory or research – try to link in detail to the theory here Issue and Debate Any strength or limitation of the theory or research A comparison to another relevant explanation or theory; if you do this, describe the new theory only very briefly – the point is to make a comparison You need to include research – without research you will not get high marks

18 A03: Evaluation – Link back
So what are you saying…..? By so what, we mean make a further comment, so why does this point really matter for the theory, or what does it really mean for the theory? If you can't make a so what? point, it would be better to select a different evaluation point since the so what? is the bit that gets you most marks.

19 Lets practice…

20 Peer marking Swap your essay with a friend.
Using your opinion, rate from 1 to 5 (1 being good, 5 being poor) each paragraph on the points below: Make perfect sense? Have excellent accuracy? Link the point to the essay title? Use the correct terminology? Have succinctness and clarity? Excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation? Summarise at the bottom of each paragraph what could make the paragraph better.

21 Improve your answer using your forensic pack
Using the feedback from your friend and a different colour pen… Improve your answer (you can use your pack for help if you need)

22 Write an answer to one of the questions below:
Bring it with you tomorrow as I will look over it with you independently.
