1 In several species of birds, the males show off their bright colors and long feathers. The dull colored females usually pick the brightest colored males for mates. Male offspring inherit their father’s bright colors and long feathers. Compared to earlier generations, future generations of these birds will be expected to have a greater proportion of (1) bright-colored females (2) dull-colored females (3) dull-colored males (4) bright-colored males

2 Do all things evolve the same way?

3 Charles Darwin

4

5 Darwin’s Finches

6 They become different species!
ADAPTIVE RADIATION Offspring were adapted to the environments on the different islands (or they died). Survivors reproduce and pass on traits with positive adaptive value (selected). Genes change more and more over time. They become different species!

7 Everyone competes for limited resources
Species adapt to different niches

8 EVOLVE!

9 The differences observed in the bird beaks are most likely due to
(1) asexual reproduction of these finch species (2) the selection for different shaped beaks that best suit different niches (3) the genetic recombination associated with mitotic cell division (4) the genetic engineering of the DNA of each of these species REMEMBER! A niche is the way a creature lives.

10 They have different niches!
Which two finches would compete the least for food? (1) small ground finch and large ground finch (2) large ground finch and sharp-billed ground finch (3) small tree finch and medium ground finch (4) vegetarian finch and small ground finch They have different niches!

11 The reason for the existence of many species of finches on the different Galapagos Islands is
(1) the abundance of available food (2) DNA mutations during mitosis that occur more often in birds (3) sexual reproduction (4) competition for resources
