4 Seasons and Weather Weather and climate

5 Seasons Happen because of the changing position of the earth in relation to the sun Earth tilted at 23.5° angle Tilt and revolution causes different parts of earth to receive more sun at different times of year seasons

6 Seasons - Solstices The day on which the sun shines directly over either the Tropic of Cancer or the Tropic of Capricorn Is the longest day of year if summer solstice or shortest day of year if winter solstice

7 Seasons - Equinoxes The biannual times when days and nights all over world are equal in length because sun is directly over the equator Marks the beginning of spring and autumn

8 Climate Weather The day to day conditions.
It is raining outside… The weather conditions over time. Cold Winters.

9 Four major factors affect climate
Wind and ocean currents Latitude Elevation Topography

10 Basic facts about wind and ocean currents
Warm air and warm water rises -> AWAY from equator Cold air and cold water sinks -> TO the equator

11 Winds – Global Air Circulation
Equator receives the most solar energy Hot air rises and moves to poles taking heat and moisture with it

12 Global Wind Patterns Coriolis effect: bending of winds by earth’s rotation Trade winds: - prevailing winds in low latitudes - blow from east to west • Westerlies: - mid-latitude winds (30-60° N and S latitudes) • Easterlies: - high latitude (polar) winds ° N and S latitudes

13 Ocean Currents Ocean currents: rivers flowing in ocean
Flow clockwise in Northern hemisphere Flow counter-clockwise in Southern hemisphere

14 How do ocean currents affect climate
Warms or cools winds blowing over land - Gulf Stream keeps temperatures of Western Europe moderate Affects the amount of precipitation in coastal areas - Cold currents prevent moisture usually causing deserts

15 Latitudes and Climate Three general zones of climate based on latitudes - low latitudes/tropical - mid- latitudes/ temperate - high latitudes/polar

16 Elevation Temperature decreases 3.5 degrees per 1000 feet of elevation
Example: Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa is capped with snow year round

17 Elevation – the Rain shadow
Leeward Windward

18 Climate Activity Use your text and an atlas to research the assigned climate zone to become an expert. Create a poster using the information. You will present your poster to the class

19 Closing Summary 3 facts you learned about seasons and climate
2 illustrations of a season or climate fact 1 question you still have
