1 Development of Suspension Bridges DEBBIE POON
Before I start I just want to tell you what I do.. I’m working for a consulting engineer firm in London, specialise in the design of bridges . The company has introduced and developed efficient deck designs for long span bridges and new techniques of constructing/erecting cable and deck efficiently. This presentation is an extract from a paper Dr Brown and I presented at a conference in Shanghai.Dr Brown is the director of our company and he is internationally recognised as the world’s leading innovator in long-span bridge design and engineering. I promised him that I will show a picture of him, as he helped me to put the presentation together. IABSE/CUES SYMPOSIUM DECEMBER 2003

2 Clifton Bridge 1st Generation Debbie Poon, Brown Beech.
And the clifton bridge (bristol) designed by the famous engineer Brunel at a span of 214m opened in 1856. 1st Generation Debbie Poon, Brown Beech.

3 Manhattan Bridge 2nd GENERATION (Deflection Theory)
Manhattan was the first suspension bridge to be designed using deflection theory. The deflection theory takes into account the displacement of the main cable under traffic load when calculating the bending moments in the stiffening girders. Opened to traffic in 1909, main span of 448m 2nd GENERATION (Deflection Theory) Debbie Poon, Brown Beech.

4 Verrazano Narrows Bridge
Verrazano narrows is another example which adopted the torsioanlly stiff truss deck entrance of NY harbour, built early 60s (longest in the states) 1300m 3rd GENERATION (Post Tacoma) Debbie Poon, Brown Beech.

5 Storebaelt, Denmark 4TH GENERATION (Severn Type)
Storebealt Bridge in Denmark Our company introduced the use of “controlled tension” method of spinning in cable construction and has proved its efficiency on this bridge and a few others 4TH GENERATION (Severn Type) Debbie Poon, Brown Beech.

6 5TH GENERATION (Streamlined Multi-box)
Illustration of Dandandelles, another example. 5TH GENERATION (Streamlined Multi-box) Debbie Poon, Brown Beech.

7 Messina deck section Debbie Poon, Brown Beech.
Various schemes were developed for Dandandelles... this is one of them, Dandandelles cross section, Messina deck section Debbie Poon, Brown Beech.
