1 Sickle Cell Anemia  By Mick and Jerome

2 What is Sickle Cell Anemia?
It’s an inherited disease that is found mostly in Africa. It turns red cells to abnormal sickle shaped red cells which can cause blood vessel occlusion, tissue infarctions and abdominal pain. Tissue infractions is when tissues die because there’s not enough oxygen is being transferred.  Blood vessel occlusion/ vascular occlusion -  a blockage of a blood vessel. Can cause deep vein thrombosis, a formation of a blood clot in a deep vain, mostly common in the retina and legs.

3 How are occlusions found?
They are found with Doppler Sonography. Ultrasound Sees internal body organs

4 How is Sickle Cell Anemia inherited
Sickle Cell is inherited as an Autosomal Recessive because the gene is not linked to a sex chromosome. That means that the gene can be passed from a parent carrying it to a male and female child. If you inherit just 1 Sickle Cell from a parent then you are in the carrier state which means you don’t have the disease. There has to be 2 present Sickle cells in order to cause the disease.

5 Symptoms There are many Symptoms involving Sickle Cell Anemia.
1. Swelling of hands and feet 2. Tiredness 3. Pain 4. Delayed Growth:

6 Genotypes Affected Person Non-affected person

7 Phenotypes  Affected person  Non – affected person

8 Is there a Cure for Sickle Cell Anemia
Technically there is no cure for the Sickle cell anemia there are only treatments to reduce symptoms, avoiding crisis and preventing complications.  Stem cell transplant involves replacing bone marrow infected by the sickle cell with a healthy one from a donor. The procedure requires to have a matched donor such as a sibling that does not have sickle cell disease. For many people there are no donors.

9 Embolization Common procedure Inserts catheter Deploys coils
Changes blood flow

10 Causes Hemoglobin S causes the red blood cells to become abnormally shaped instead of having normal, disk shaped cells. These blood cells become sickled shape. It also makes a red blood cells life span shorter.
