2 Title 1 Programs Can Help:
Children do better in school and feel better about themselves Teachers understand the needs and concerns of students and parents Parents understand their child and be more involved in the child’s education

3 What is a Title 1 School? Being a Title 1 school means receiving federal funding (Title 1 dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. These dollars are used for… Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these student’s meet the State’s challenging content standards. Purchasing supplemental staff/programs/materials/supplies Conducting parental Involvement meetings/trainings/activities Recruiting/Hiring/Retaining Highly Qualified Teachers Being a Title 1 school also means family engagement and parents’ rights.

4 Title 1 Funds Any Local Educational Agency ( School District) with a Title 1 Allocation exceeding $500,000 is required by law to set aside 1% of it’s Title 1 allocation for parental involvement. Of that 1%, 10% may be reserved at the school district for system-wide initiatives related to family engagement. The remaining 90% must be allocated to all Title 1 schools in the district. Therefore each Title 1 school receives its portion of the 90% to implement school-level family engagement. You, as Title 1 parents, have the right to be involved in how this money is spent.

5 School-wide or Targeted Assistance
A school wide program is a comprehensive reform strategy designed to upgrade the entire educational program in a Title 1 school; its primary goal is to ensure that all students, particularly those who are low-achieving, demonstrate proficient and advanced levels of achievement on state academic achievement standards.

8 Curriculum Students are provided instruction using the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). The GSE provide clear expectations for instruction, assessment, and student work. They define the level of work that demonstrates achievement of the standards, enabling a teacher to know “how good is good enough.”

9 Assessments GMAS (Georgia Milestones Assessment System)
Students in grades 3 through 8 take an end-of-grade assessment in English Language Arts and mathematics while students in grades 5 and 8 are also assessed in science and social studies. MAP Reading and Math: Grades 6-8 (three times a year)

10 Teacher Professional qualifications
You, as Title 1 Parents, have the right to request the qualifications of your child’s teachers.

12 Family engagement How can parents become involved at the school
Parents have a right to request opportunities for regular meetings for parents to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions about the education of their children The school must respond to any such suggestions from parents as soon as practicably possible

13 Family Engagement Funds
SCCPSS reserves 1% from the total amount of the Title 1, Part A funds it receives in FY18 to carry out family engagement requirements. Family/Parent input as sought through a survey and Parent Forum held in the spring on how to spend these funds.

14 Family Engagement Funds
Through collaboration with parents/families it was decided that for the school year the following items would be funded: Parent Center supplies (toner, copy paper, and etc.) Mounted display screen to communicate announcements and upcoming events
