1 Types of Prewriting

2 Different Reasons to Write
We write for fun. We write letters, stories, and jokes We write to share information with our family or friends. Most SCHOOL writing, however, is expository writing and fits into a different category.

3 The purpose of Expository Writing Gives information about a topic
Explains ideas Gives directions Shows how to do something

4 BUT Before you can write anything, you must organize your thoughts.
This is called PREWRITING and it is the first step in the writing process.

5 Brainstorming Unorganized method of thinking that gets your ideas on paper. You are given a topic and you write down everything that comes into your head. Example: Topic of “My Favorite Foods”: bacon, popcorn, peanut butter, tomatoes, cheese, bread

6 Webbing Organized way to put your thoughts on paper. They guide your writing by having a middle Topic bubble, and Information bubbles coming out from center bubble.

7 Freewriting Putting your ideas onto paper in the form of sentences as quickly as possible. Unlike the final essay, you don't worry about spelling, punctuation and grammar. Example: Make a list of your favorite things: I love Piza I like to play Vid games I can wach TV al day I can Footbal good I like Talkin w/frends

8 Listing A way to jot down thoughts on a “big topic” and narrow it down to one “smaller” thought. Example: Big Topic: Make a list of your favorite things: Pizza Video Games Watching TV Playing Football Talking with Friends

9 Storyboard The use of drawings to help organize a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
