2 WorkWise Choosing a Job
In this workshop we will learn ways on how to build your confidence, find career options, and how to market your skills.

3 WorkWise: Choosing a Job
Building Your Confidence: Building your confidence and keeping a positive attitude will prepare you for success. Exploring Your Career Options: Understanding where you are now and defining your ideal career will guide you in your job search. Marketing Your Skills: Developing a strong résumé, cover letter, and social medial presence will show potential employers what you can do. Looking for a job is stressful. It is even more difficult if you are not sure what you want to do. Three steps that will help you choose the right job.

4 How Confident Am I ? I know what kind of job I want.
I believe I can be successful. I believe I can get a good job. I know my strengths and weaknesses. I am excited about my future. You have to ask yourself do these apply to me?

5 Self-Check: My Goals I have never had a paid job.
I have a job, but I really need a change. I have not had a job for over six months. I work one or more part-time jobs, but I would like one full-time job. I think I know what I want to do, but I don’t know how to start. I like my job, but I want to know how to move up in my career. Read each statement. Which ones that apply to you.

6 Make SMART Goals Specific—Be very clear about what you are going to do. Measurable—Choose goals with results that you can measure or count. Attainable—Set a goal for getting a job that you qualify for using your skills and experience. Realistic—Set goals that are practical and possible. Time-Stamped—Give yourself a deadline. Specific: For example, “I will apply for a job as a pharmacy technician at my local pharmacy.” Measureable: For example, “I will fill out three job applications each day.” Attainable: For example, “I will get a job using my cooking skills.” Realistic: For example, “I will get a job nearby that I can get to by bus.” Time-Stamped: For example, “I will get my new job by May 1.”

7 Exercise: SMART or Not? Look at these goals. Which of these goals are SMART? I will apply for 500 jobs each week. I will find a job that I can walk or ride my bike to. I will get a job as a manager in charge of a big company. I will get any job I can find. I will search job listings for one hour every day. I will get a job soon.

8 Turning Negatives into Positives
Don’t let mistakes drag you down! Learn from mistakes and move on. Approach life like driving a car. Keep a balanced perspective. Celebrate your accomplishments! 1. We all make mistakes—don’t dwell on them. 2. Step back and ask yourself what you can learn from this mistake. Identify ways to change your actions, so you don’t repeat the mistake. Understand that mistakes happen and are a necessary part of life. Move forward. 3. It is sometimes hard to concentrate; we have many distractions in life. Keep your focus on your destination. 4. Try not to worry and keep everything in perspective (the way you think about something). 5. Celebrate yourself. You need to respect yourself and your abilities. If you do, others will, too.

9 To Sum Things Up We learned that having _______________ and keeping a __________ attitude helps us be successful. We need to set ___________ goals for ourselves. We should be ___________ about goals. Choose goals with results we can ____________. Match goals and job skills that result in __________ goals. Being practical is being ______________. “I will have a job by May 1st ,” is an example of a ____________-________ goal. Confidence; positive.
