1 FACULTY OF LAW’S POSITION ON REVIEW OF EXISTING IGR DRIVES, IMPACT ON THE UNIVERSITY AND ACTION PLANS TO PROPEL EKSU IGR INITIATIVES

2 Introduction Existing IGR Drives Revenue from school fees from Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme. Revenue from Postgraduate programme (LL.M, M.Phil & Ph.D). Revenue from Diploma in Law Programme.

3 Impact on the University
Minimal impact because of the numerical strength of students on the programmes.

4 Challenges that impede effective IGR efforts
The official quota of the Faculty is 60. LL.B. programme is not allowed to be run on part-time basis Absence of a Law Clinic which can provide pro-bono services. Lack of good offices for consultancy and training programmes. Lack of enough staff at senior positions. Few students on the Postgraduate programmes. Breach of the agreement for the running of the Diploma in Law Programme.

5 Action Plan to propel EKSU IGR Initiative
The establishment of a Law clinic in the Faculty for training of students and handling of University cases. Increase in the admission quota of the University to be pursued to increase number of fee-paying students. New programmes for regular and part-time students at sub-degree, degree and postgraduate levels are to be introduced.

6 Action Plan cont’d Specialised Institutes and Centres to be established to train students and members of the public in specific areas of the Law. International conferences on the Rule of Law and other legal issues. Seminars and consultancy services on Legal matters for legislators, councilors, traditional rulers. Training programmes on sundry legal matters can be organised and handled on behalf of the University

7 Action Plan cont’d Organisation of short-term courses in law for Para-legal officers. Obas and Chiefs that are involved in the administration of justice at the local level can be trained Customary courts members who are not lawyers can be trained in the Faculty to enhance efficiency.

8 Conclusion It is our fervent belief at the Faculty of Law that the Faculty can also be a goldmine for the University if the facilities are upgraded in terms of infrastructure and staffing. Again, if the suggested action plan is backed up by action, then the Faculty and nay the University may as well be on the way to prosperity in no distant future.

9 Thanks for listening. Prof. Ifedayo Timothy Akomolede (Dean of Law)
