1 Physiology UNIT 6 Psychology

2 Introduction I am going to produce a powerpoint that describes and explains the physiological and psychological responses common to sports injuries. I will explain why the physiological responses are taking place and their role in the healing process following an injury. I will also explain why any psychological issues occur, and the short and long term effects they may have on the athlete.

3 Physiology definition
Exercise Physiology is the study of how exercise alters the function and structure of the body. A sports physiologist examines the acute responses and chronic adaptations to athletic performance in a variety of environments.

4 Blood clotting Damage to the vasculature quickly leads to massive bruising and, if unrepaired, to extreme blood loss and consequent organ failure.

5 Scar tissue Less flexible Not as strong Plastic characteristics

6 Pain Acute (from many trauma injuries) Aching Continuous (heartburn)

7 Psychological As well as the physiological responses of the body to injury, psychological responses can aslo cause stress to an athlete. Fear Stress Anxiety

10 Anger

11 Decreased confidence

12 Denial

13 Frustration

14 Isolation from team mates
