William "Rusty" Ruthven was born on the 21st of May 1893 in Collingwood, Victoria

William joined the Australian army in 1915, at
the age of 23

He was placed in the 22nd battalion and was sent off to the Gallipoli campaign and the Western front to fight for his country…

In 1980 William personally took on enemy strong points capturing 32 German soldiers.

William led by example, inspiring and encouraging his men and was rewarded the Victoria cross for his efforts

Here is the start of the letter of approval he received from the king…
“For most conspicuous bravery and initiative in action. During the advance Ruthven's company suffered numerous casualties, and his company commander was severely wounded. He thereupon assumed command of this portion of the assault, took charge of the company headquarters, and rallied the section in his vicinity.”

There are no other records of his service.

William survived the war and decided to return to
the army in WWII as a Major

When he returned home he became part of the Victorian parliament as the state labour politician

William died on the 12th of January 1970

People like William should be remembered for their bravery in the face of danger, for the resilience and courage needed for what they had to endure and for fighting for there country when we needed them
