1 What are Social Stories?
Goal of the Social Story Carol Gray Increase the individual’s understanding Make them more comfortable Increase independence Provide appropriate responses for the situation. Definition: A Social Story Social stories are a tool for teaching social skills to students with ASD and related disabilities. Provide accurate information about situations that are difficult or confusing. “A Social StoryTM describes a situation, skill, or concept in terms of relevant social cues, perspectives, and common responses in a specifically defined style and format” (Gray, 2003, p.2) .

2 How do you write Social Stories?
Descriptive sentences (Introduction) -factual information of the situation. Eg. Where , who, what, why. Perspective sentences (Body) -thoughts and feelings of those involved. Cooperative sentences - “who” can assist the individual in a situation. Directive sentences -provide instruction on “what” the individual is to do. Affirmative sentences (Conclusion) -can be used to reassure the individual Control sentences- use like situations to explain the new situations. Usually authored by the student. Directive statements I will…., I can……., I should….. 50% of all Social Stories affirm achievements. written from a first or third person perspective. uses positive language. always contains descriptive sentences, with an option to include any one or more of the five remaining sentence types (perspective, cooperative, directive, affirmative, and/or control sentences). an introduction that clearly identifies the topic a body that adds detail a conclusion that reinforces and summarizes the information Social Story Ratio 0-1 directive or control sentences = 2-5 descriptive and/or perspective sentences

3 Social Story Example. Sometimes our class sits on the carpet.
Code: Blue – Descriptive Red - Prescriptive Social Story Example. Sometimes our class sits on the carpet. We sit on the carpet to listen to stories and for group lessons. My friends are trying hard to listen so they can enjoy the story or learn from the lessons. It can be hard for them to listen if someone is noisy or not sitting still. I will try to sit still and stay quiet during our time on the carpet.

4 I like to talk with my friends.

I may talk with my friends about things that I like. ·        I might talk about my favorite TV show. ·        I might talk about a game I like to play. ·        I might talk about my trip to the shopping centre. I may talk with my friends about school things. ·        I might talk about the story I am reading. ·        I might talk about my art project. ·        I might talk about a report I am writing.

I may tell my friends I like them.       I might tell my friends they are nice.     I might tell my friends they are funny.       I might tell my friends they are smart.  I talk with my friends about things that are important to kids my age. I don’t talk about things that are adult conversations.       I don’t tell friends that we are in love.       I don’t tell friends that I am falling in love with them.       I don’t tell friends that I will marry them. I will try and talk with my friends about things that are important to kids my age.
