1 Students will be able to contrast velocity and speed.
Goal 1 Students will solve for speed in the equation speed = distance/time using correct units.  Students will be able to contrast velocity and speed.

2 Goal 1 Part 1

3 Goal 1 Part 2 Always has direction.

4 How do you know if you are moving?
Motion is relative. Motion is defined as an object that is changing it's distance from another object.

5 What is a reference point?
A place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion. An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point.

6 Measuring Distance SI unit for measurement: Distance = Meters Time = Seconds Speed = Meters/Second

7 Goal 1 Part 1

8 Speed Calculation

9 Based on the video: Distance was 100m,  Time:     Started sliding at 8s, landed at 14seconds      = 6 seconds What is his speed?

10 Using the Formula Speed = Distance / time Speed = 100m / 6 s =

11 Answer 16.6 Label your answer!

12 How to Label Meters / Seconds = m/s Also known as Meters per second

13 A harder question still
Calculate the Distance the boy travels if his speed is 2 meters per second and in 3 seconds.

14 A harder question still
Calculate the Distance the boy travels if his speed is 2 meters per second and in 3 seconds. Formula is Speed times Time

15 Answer 2 meters/second times 3 seconds 2 x 3 = 6 What to label it?

16 Calculate the Distance the boy travels if his speed is 2 meters per second and in 3 seconds.

17 Average vs. Instantaneous
Average Speed. Total distance divided by total time. Instantaneous speed Rate at which an object is moving at a given instant in time.

18 What is Velocity? When you know both  speed and direction of  an object's motion you know the VELOCITY of the object. Ex: 25 km/h Eastward Important applications:  Air traffic controllers, Airplane pilots

19 Graphing motion You can show the motion of an object on a line graph in which you plot distance versus time. Y axis = distance (position) X axis = time At any point in time you can note the distance and time an object has traveled. SLOPE = steepness of line How fast one variable changes in realtionship to another.

20 Slope Slope = rise / run Same as distance / time
Different slopes show changes in speed.
