1 Operational Feedback DEX Status Jan 04
Mike Newton MOD

2 Operational Feedback Capabilities
The UK MoD has funded the development of the following 11 core DEX 007 capabilities which are complete to level 1 C047 Product_change C068 Referencing_product_as_realized_configuration C032 Representing_activity C048 Representing_condition_evaluated C044 Representing _environment_actual C Representing_ environment_typical C Representing_product_location C Representing_state_observed C Representing_work_done C065 Representing_work_order C066 Representing_work_request . As reported in London the capabilities shown are complete to level 1 but they still require: a peer review of all capabilities. · and the development of business reference data; Since London we have had the joint modellers meeting which took the development of a number of capabilities forward and we were briefed on the detail at the 21 Jan conference call - Additional work is now required in order to further develop DEX 007 to a point were it is suitable for implementation. To this end the MOD have recently funded Rob Bodington to carry out a package of work that will take DEX 7 forward and this will inevitably mean there will be a good spin off for other DEXs .

3 Additional Work Contracted by MOD in Support of DEX 7
Ensure that all capabilities required by DEX 007 are completed and accepted (including those required by DEX 007 but yet to be allocated or completed by other teams). Generate and validate the long form EXPRESS for DEX 007 Develop Business reference data for DEX 007 Test DEX 007 Populate the DEX with example test data Investigate the RDL infrastructure The work we have tasked Rob with can be covered under the following bullets Bullet 1. This involves Review Work (review and correct)on some 15 Capabilities, the fixing of some 4 capabilities (developed by non-modellers) and taking responsibility for a further 8 capabilities that have been identified but not yet developed (TAF). Bullets 2 &3. Self explanatory Bullet 4. This might well involve extending the bike test set as required to cover the needs of DEX 7 - but in turn an extended data set will clearly benefit other DEX teams. Rob will also investigate the procurement of real data for testing purposes and establish the requirements (for using it for test purposes). Bullet 6. This work will include; investigating the use of OWL for representing the RDL Investigating the publicly available tools (Protégé and JENA) that can be used for the creation and management of the RDL Developing a POC demonstrator illustrating how the RDL can be created / managed/accessed. The target date for all of the above is 31 Mar 04 Additionally it is important to ensure that ISO 10303/239 achieves formal publication and we have set aside some funding to cover this contingency. But this is not just a MOD issue and it is hoped that their will be support for this by all the organisations represented here.

4 Issues The sharing of software tools
The management of the development of capabilities now that modellers work often spans many DEXs. Input from Rob Bullet 1. We intend to put the tool being developed by Rob (to automate the process of generating a long form) onto Dexlib. Are all other organisations doing the same? Bullet 2. The MOD are funding the development of 8 capabilities that are with other DEX teams?

5 MOD Early Implementations
UMMS - Single interface from a Work Package Management System to several dockyards SDD / VMP Configuration Management interface CTS - Logistics Proof of Concept WSA Enterprise Application Integration pilot LSC is leading on the development all MOD Early Implementations and Nigel will give a detailed brief. But a quick overview of implementations being sponsored by the MOD are: Bullet 1 Unit Maintenance Management System. A new system was needed to interface with 3 different shoreside IT systems (Dev /Ports/Clyde). In order to prevent the development of 3 separate interfaces it was decided to export data in PLCS format. For Devonport Naval Base, the preparatory mapping work is complete and the system is due to go live any time now. UMMS was the core for DEX 4 and 9 development and the MOD have recently let a contract for implementation guides to be produced. Bullet 2 Sm Definition Data Base (ex MRC) / Vessel Material Planning. There was an existing interface between the two systems which has been successfully mapped to PLCS. The WSA have now committed to implementing a PLCS based replacement utilising DEX 8 (Product as Individual). No timescale. Bullet 3 The aim of the POC is to use PLCS to exploit engineering asset management and supply systems to extract extract management information through the use of a Data Warehouse and a collaborative working environment. The preliminary governence work (business case etc) is almost complete and work will commence in Apr 04 and will hopefully be complete by end of year. Bullet 4 The WSA Enterprise Application Integration pilot is similar to the POC and will essentially extract data from 5 systems: CRISP (RN logistics), SSDD (Config Management), UMMMS (RN WM) ,PEPS (DML WM), SSCWE (Su Sh CWE). No time scale available.

6 Summary Review / Completion of all capabilities required by DEX 7.
Level 2 / 3 completion of DEX 007 including The development of initial business reference data for DEX 007 The testing of DEX 007 through extension of existing PLCS test data suite “Bike data” to cover scope of DEX 007 Produce a proof of concept demonstrator showing how the RDL can be created, managed and accessed by applications Provision of support to enable publication of ISO 10303/239 Presentation on requirements for publishing a DEX as an OASIS standard Extension of DEXlib to incorporate XML Schema (Part 28) view of the DEX Providing we do not encounter unforeseen difficulties funding is in place to complete the following work with a target date of 31 Mar 04.
