1 Monitoring Report Update
FREMP Monitoring Report Update GP/PS March 2007 A Living, Working River

2 FREMP Background Intergovernmental partnership program to coordinate the environmental management of the Fraser River estuary Partners are federal, provincial and regional governments and port authorities; work with local governments Established in 1985 Vision of A Living, Working River

3 Two Main Roles: Policy Coordination 2. Coordinated Project Review
Estuary Management Plan, 2003 Water and Land Use Committee Monitoring Report, 2001 2. Coordinated Project Review One-window environmental review of physical works in riparian area FREMP Environmental Review Committee

4 Process Followed Reviewed 2001 Report and other indicator initiatives
Explored new indicators/issues Clarified purpose and audience Developed final list of 8 indicators Public workshop held April 2006 on draft

5 Indicators: tied to EMP
Water Quality – nutrients and metals* Fecal Coliform counts Habitat Gain/Loss Sediment Removal Marine Cargo Industrial lands along foreshore* Recreational corridors along shoreline Visits to regional parks along estuary

6 Findings & Trends Ambient water quality for nutrients and metals in estuary is within provincial Water Quality Objectives (new baseline) Fecal coliform counts remain low 88,000 m2 (8.8 ha) habitat has been created in estuary since 1986 14,000 m2 marsh habitat created since 2000 through conversion of less productive habitat

7 Findings & Trends Sediment removal is balanced with natural replenishment Marine cargo volumes continue to rise 29% of foreshore lands available for industrial use (new baseline – no trend) 147km shoreline recreational corridors have been created (+5km since 2000) Visits to regional parks along the estuary have increased by 28% since 2000

8 Lessons Learned/Challenges

9 Next Steps Promote 2006 Monitoring Report
Continue to report on FREMP progress using indicators and other means Use the Report findings to help update the Estuary Management Plan in 2008 Update the Monitoring Report: establish trends, consider new issues and targets
