3 The 1st Amendment Freedom of: Religion Assembly Press Petition Speech

4 Freedom of Religion “Separation of church and state” means that the government cannot favor one religion over another, nor interfere with religious worship

5 Freedom of Assembly Freedom of Petition
We can gather together to discuss or protest Freedom of Petition We can voice our concerns with government officials

6 Freedom of the Press Freedom of Speech
News reporting is free from government control and available to all Freedom of Speech We can freely express our thoughts and ideas 6

7 2nd Amendment The right to bear arms

8 3rd Amendment No quartering of troops in private homes during peacetime

9 4th Amendment No searches or seizures of property without a valid warrant describing the place to be searched and the object to be seized.

12 5th Amendment Must be indicted (grand jury) - formally accused of a crime No double jeopardy- cannot be tried twice for the same crime Cannot take property without due process

13 5th Amendment You do not have to testify against yourself. I plead the 5th! Cannot be forced to incriminate yourself (give evidence that will point to your guilt).

14 6th Amendment Right to a fair and speedy trial:
Told the charges against themselves Impartial jury Trial held in district of crime

15 6th Amendment Confront witnesses against themselves
Subpoena witnesses for themselves Have an attorney

16 7th Amendment The right to have a jury in a civil trial

17 8th Amendment Bail and/or punishment cannot be cruel or unusual

18 Silent 9th Amendment The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. Any individual rights not listed in the Bill of Rights are protected here in the 9th amendment RIGHTS

19 10th Amendment All power not delegated (given) to the Federal government is reserved (saved) for the state governments.

22 Civil War Amendments 13th amendment- Former slaves are now free
No slavery allowed in the U.S. and territories

23 Civil War Amendments 14th Amendment All former slaves are citizens
All born or naturalized citizens are entitled to due process of law

24 Civil War Amendments 15th Amendment
All males 21 years or older are eligible to vote regardless of former conditions of servitude, race, or creed.
