1 Aim: What are the characteristics of a civilization?
Do now – copy the Early Civilization vocabulary into notebooks Civilization – a developed human society where a high level of culture, science, industry & government has been reached. Polytheistic – believing in many gods. Ritual – a ceremony that is always performed in the same way, in order to mark an important religious or social occasion. Traditional economy – an economy based on farming.

3 The Rise of Civilizations
The first civilizations developed 5,000 years ago in fertile river valleys. These early civilizations had many similar features such as: Cities & Government Traditional Economy Organized religion Job Specialization & Social Classes Art & Architecture System of Writing

4 Cities & Government Surplus (extra) food led to an increase in population. Systems of leadership were needed to produce (make) enough food & to protect the city. Public work projects like roads, bridges & protective walls were built.

10 Create your own Civilization
Work groups of 4 Brainstorm ideas for your name, geographic features, government, religion, jobs & writing system Each group needs to create visual aids (posters, pamphlets, magazines, advertisements) & present the civilization to the class on October 14th. This project counts as a 100 point test grade. Marking Period I ends on Oct 19th.

Do Now: Organize your groups & brainstorm some ideas for your civilization By the end of class today: each group needs to have a plan for their project Each group member needs to have a clear, responsibility for this project Homework:(work on it over the 3 –day weekend!!!
