1 Warm Up (7 Minutes) Before you start: Make sure that your homework is in the homework bin Copy the question then answer them. Solve for x. 6(x + 10) = 84 Answer the following questions: Which has a bigger value 50 kilometers per hour or 50 yards per hour? Would you use miles to measure the length of the classroom? If not, explain and provide a better unit of measurement.

2 How old is Mr. Do?! If Mr. Do is 10,220 days old, how many years old is he?!?!? Can you figure it out?

3 Important Vocabulary Dimensional Analysis: A mathematical system using conversion factors to move from one unit of measurement to a different unit of measurement. Conversion Factor: A ratio written in fraction form that can express the same value or quantity in two different units.

4 Example 1 How many days are in 5 years
Example 1   How many days are in 5 years? In other words, convert 5 years to days. Create a ratio for the original rate (what you know): Determine the conversion factor that will ultimately lead you in the direction you are trying to go: Use dimensional analysis to solve the problem:

5 How many days are in 5 years?
Initial unit 5 years Conversion Final factor unit 5 years x 365 days = 1 year cancel

6 Convert 2,582,000 minutes to days.
Create a ratio for the original rate (what you know): Determine the conversion factor that will ultimately lead you in the direction you are trying to go: Use dimensional analysis to solve the problem:

7 How many days are in 2,582,000 minutes?
Initial unit 2,582,000 minutes Conversion Final factors unit 2,582,000 minutes x 1 hours x 1 day = 60 minutes 24 hours

8 Convert 2 gallons to cups.
Create a ratio for the original rate (what you know): Determine the conversion factor that will ultimately lead you in the direction you are trying to go: Use dimensional analysis to solve the problem:

9 How many cups are in 2 gallons??
Initial unit 2 gallons Conversion Final factors unit

10 Let’s do an activity! How many jumping jacks can you do in a minute?
Me: My Partner: Number of jumping jacks: _________ ___________ 1 Minute Minute

11 Now some questions… 1. If your partner can do this many jumping jacks in one minute, how many could she potentially do in an hour? How about in a day? Finally, how many can your partner do in a year? When talking about jumping jacks, which unit of measurement makes the most sense?

12 Quick Check! Sally is 6 years old today, how many weeks is she?
Coach Bates has been teaching at Morrow High School for 9 years, how many weeks has he taught here at MHS?

13 Independent Practice Work with your shoulder partner on the back of this worksheet!

14 Exit Ticket (5 minutes) Our classroom is 9 yards wide. How many inches wide is the room? The student below converted 2000 inches to miles. Explain what the student did wrong and why. 2000 inches x inches x feet = 126,720,000 1 foot mile

15 Ticket Out the Door Retake
If a bucket can hold 5 gallons of paint, how many pints is that? The student below converted 7,200 minutes to days. Explain what the student did wrong and why. 7,200 mins x 1 hour x hours = 2,880 days 60 mins day
