1 Transformations Sections

2 What is a transformation???
When figures in a plane are rotated, reflected, or translated to produce new figures. The new figure is called the IMAGE and the original figure is called the PREIMAGE There are four basic formations: reflections, rotations, dilations, and translations.

3 Dilation When a figure can be enlarged or reduced and are similar to each other

4 Rotation A figure that can be turned from a fixed point
The center of rotation is assumed to be the origin. A positive angle of rotation turns the figure counterclockwise, a negative angle of rotation turns the figure in a clockwise direction.  The figure does not change size.

5 Rotation cont… a negative angle of rotation turns the figure in a clockwise direction.  Rotations are isometric. Which is when the figure does not change size.

6 Translations When an object "slides" a fixed distance in a given direction.  The original object and its translation have the same shape and size, and they face in the same direction

7 Reflections Reflection is simply a flip.
Under a reflection, the figure does not change size.  It is simply flipped over the line of reflection.
