1 Case studies 6 and 8 mark questions.
Restless Earth Case studies 6 and 8 mark questions. First we will make and complete skeleton revision cards using the resources in the room. Every 10 minutes we will also be having a look at the board for extra revision info! Then we will work through some 6 and 8 mark questions using the mark schemes.

2 Volcanic eruption: Montserrat
Discuss the immediate and long-term responses to a volcanic eruption. [9 marks] Volcanic eruption: Montserrat You will need to know: causes, effects and responses. You also need to know how to assess them. Use the video and sheet to help fill in your revision card.

3 Why do people live near volcanoes?
How do people monitor and try to predict volcanic eruptions? Fat Mothers Eat Their Children Which helps you remember 5 reasons people do this: Fertile Soils – which means farmers can grow a lot of crops Minerals – which means mining can be profitable Electricity – the warm ground helps produce Geo- thermal energy Tourism – obviously brings in money Construction – good building materials can be got from the ground (like the minerals one really)

4 How do people monitor and try to predict volcanic eruptions?

5 MEDC earthquake: New Zealand
Again, use the video and sheet to fill in your skeleton revision card!

6 LEDC Earthquake: Haiti
Use this to help compare to the New Zealand earthquake! Describe how the effects of an earthquake in a richer area of the world are different from the effects of an earthquake in a poorer area of the world. (6 marks) Describe how the three Ps (predict, protect and prepare) can help to reduce the effects of earthquakes. [8 marks]

7 Working questions: Let’s have a look at a 6 mark question:
Using Figure 2 and your own knowledge describe the effects of a volcanic eruption (6 marks) Key terms? Command words? Case study? Facts? Figure 2

8 How do we write an answer?
Using a case study describe the effects of a volcanic eruption (6 marks) How do we write an answer? Model answer: Montserrat’s volcano, Chances Peak, Soufriere, erupted between 1995 and There were many effects. Primary effects included 19 deaths which were caused by the pyroclastic flows in the south of the island. As you can see in the figure many houses are inhabitable. 2/3rds of the island was covered in ash. A lahar destroyed the capital of Plymouth and more flows destroyed the airport. Secondary impacts included the evacuation of 10,000 people to the north of the island and 2000 people were evacuated off the island to places like Martinique. Other secondary effects include the loss of many farms and tourism went into decline. As you can see from the figure over half the population who left the island have not returned. What is GOOD in this answer? Could you improve it?

9 Mark scheme: Level 1 Basic (1 – 2 marks) Describes effects of a volcanic eruption. Statements are general and separate in a random order. People died and some areas were covered in ash. No link to figure Level 2 Clear (3 – 4 marks) There is some reference to the case study and figure. Statements are developed and linked – focus on a range of effects. Level 3 Detailed (5 - 6 marks) There will be detailed reference to the case study using facts and figures. They will have named places. The figure will have been used to help back up points. Candidate will have looked at both primary and secondary effects.

10 Your turn: Now you will be visiting each table with a question on it from the list on the next slide. We will be: Highlighting the command word and outlining what this means you need to do in the answer. Listing key words needed Listing facts and figures and place names Planning the paragraphs Writing an answer Writing a mark scheme Marking an answer!

11 Use a case study to evaluate the responses to an earthquake. (9 marks)
Describe how the effects of an earthquake in a richer area of the world are different from the effects of an earthquake in a poorer area of the world. (9 marks) Using a case study describe the effects of a volcanic eruption (6 marks) Describe how some countries prepare for and predict either earthquakes or volcanic eruptions (9 marks)
