1 Freshstart Facilitator Training
This PowerPoint is a tool available to assist you in facilitating the four Freshstart sessions. The information in this PowerPoint is presented in the same order as the information in the Participant Guide. There are notes for you as a facilitator in the notes section, but you will need to refer to the Participant Guide and Lesson Plans to prepare for each session. Copies of the tobacco cessation medications insert, found online in the Facilitator’s Corner, should be passed out to participants. Each of these four activities is designed around preparing for a quit attempt and should generate discussion. The Lesson Plan for Session 2 includes the goal of each activity. Watch your time, and keep the session moving along while allowing sufficient reflection time for the participants. If participants are not able to complete any of the activities during the session, encourage them to complete them as homework prior to Session 3. At the end of this session, give participants a brief introduction to the Session 3 objectives and activities. Session 2: Plan to Quit

2 Session 2 – Plan to Quit Prepare for your quit attempt
Learn from past quit attempts Learn about pharmacotherapies Understand the importance of social support Create a quit plan Now let’s look at Session 2 of the Freshstart program – Plan to Quit. Session 2 focuses on preparing participants to make a quit attempt, which includes learning from past quit attempts, understanding the available pharmacotherapies, understanding the importance of social support, and creating an individual quit plan. There are also four activities in this session, which are all geared toward the preparation for quitting – so this is a very action-oriented session.

3 Session 2 – Progress Share & Review
Individual Attention and Review Share progress or struggles since Session 1 Discuss homework Begin session 2 with the Individual Attention and Review (10-15 minutes). Your goal is to see if any participants have stories or struggles to share since the first session. This could be related to completed homework or anything related to tobacco use. The Individual Attention and Review time is deliberately shortened in this session to allow more time for participants to complete session activities.

4 Session 2 – Pick a Quit Day
Importance of Quit Day It takes 5-7 serious quit attempts before a person successfully quits for good Once you have decided to quit, you can select a quit day within the next month. This time frame is critical because it provides enough time to solidify your decision and prepare, but not rationalize not quitting. Did you know that it takes on average 5-7 quit attempts before a person successfully quits for good?

5 Session 2 – Make This Attempt Your Last
Learn to improve your chances of quitting for good Learn from previous quit attempts Learn by listening to others The last time I tried to quit (page 11 of participant guide) Goal – Learn what worked and didn’t work during your last quit attempt.

6 Session 2 – Quitting Methods
Cold turkey Tapering Scheduled reduced smoking Scheduled non-reduced smoking Telephone based quitlines Cold turkey – Stopping smoking all at once, without cessation medications or changes to your smoking routine. Tapering – Involves smoking fewer times per day. To ensure success, use the smallest amount of cigarettes per day. Scheduled reduced smoking – Smoking at certain times per day and gradually increasing the duration between cigarettes. If you miss a cigarette, it cannot be saved for later. Scheduled non-reduced smoking – Schedule your cigarettes to be smoked, but do not increase duration between them. Wait until your planned quit day to quit all together. Telephone based quitlines – Tobacco cessation programs offered via the telephone. Most are free and offer counseling, resources, information and support. These are sometimes offered through employers or are provided by your state’s department of health.

7 Session 2 – Pharmacotherapy
Nicotine replacement therapies Buproprion Varenicline (Chantix) The Food and Drug Administration has approved these 7 products to help people quit smoking. There are advantages and disadvantages to each product. For more information about each product visit or call the American Cancer Society at Your doctor or pharmacist can provide more information as well.

8 Session 2 – Pharmacotherapy
Circle the medication(s) you have tried Place a * next to medications you are interested in Refer to this page when you inquire about your options Pharmacotherapy options (page 14 of participant guide) Goal – Think about the available medications and what might work best when quitting. Circle the medication(s) you have tried, place an * next to medications you are interested in, and refer to this sheet when you talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

9 Session 2 – Family and Friends
Ask your family and friends to: Listen when you have concerns Help you stay away from temptation Do physical activity with you Offer to do things with you Supportive family and friends are important while quitting smoking. They can provide encouragement, distraction, humor, and support when you need it most. Most people find it helpful to have one or more close family members or friends involved in their quitting process. If your family or friends smoke, you may need to request them to support you in very specific ways. Click ‘enter’ to reveal more information. Unfortunately, not everyone has this type of support. Some people who are trying to quit report that family and friends become angry and resentful because they are envious of the quitter’s success, are reminded of their own failed attempts, or are worried about not being able to smoke around the quitter.

10 Session 2 - Support System
Write down the names of people in your support system Write down how you would like each of them to respond to your challenges with quitting Create a support system plan (page 16 of participant guide) Goal – Identify members of your social support system and how they can help during your quit attempt.  Write down the names of people in your support system and indicate how you would like each of them to respond to your challenges with quitting.

11 Session 2 – Plan to Quit Customize the steps provided to fit your individual needs and quit plan My Quit plan (pages of the participant guide) Goal – Review steps to take when preparing for your Quit Day. Customize the steps within the provided quit plan to fit your individual needs.

12 Session 2 – Summary Successfully quit is a matter of planning and commitment A detailed plan, with several options increases chances for success

13 Session 3 – Your Quit Day Nicotine withdrawal
Rationalizations when quitting Stress management Overview & Purpose This session of the American Cancer Society Freshstart® program focuses on a participant’s Quit Day and provides information about how to deal with nicotine withdrawal and rationalizations. Stress management, including relaxation techniques and working through negative thoughts, are also discussed. At the end of this session, participants should feel prepared to get through the first few days of quitting and beyond.
