Explain reasons for European exploration and settlement of North America, with emphasis on the interests of the French, Spanish, and British in the southeastern area. 2 Reasons for Exploration
The 3 G’s God: to spread their religion and/or escape religious persecution Gold: heard rumors of excessive amounts of gold, wanted to become wealthier Glory: more land=more power Other Reasons Over-population: Land was scarce but more people were moving to the cities Trade: explorers thought a faster route to Asia could be found in the New World (America)

3 Spain Exploration Goals: Explorers Christopher Columbus
Convert Indians to Christianity Bring honor to Spain and its conquistadors Find gold and expand Spanish trade empire Explorers Christopher Columbus Juan Ponce de Leon Hernando de Soto By the 1500s, Spain had numerous settlements from Florida to Georgia

4 Hernando De Soto In 1540, a Spanish conquistador (Explore and Conquer) named Hernando De Soto led 600 soldiers across Georgia. 1st explorer to adventure through Georgia De Soto was searching for “cities of gold”. De Soto’s men tortured and enslaved the natives in order to gain information about gold and silver locations. He never found the gold, but he did leave a lasting impact on the Native Americans in Georgia.

6 Mercantilism Mercantilism- trade policy where:
1- colonies provide raw materials 2- England manufactures goods 3- England sells goods back to the colonies England GETS RICH!

7 French Exploration 1562 -Ribault & Huguenots settled at Charles Fort
Huguenot: French Protestant Came to new world in search of religious freedom Tried to settle in Florida, Spain drove them out In 1603, French explorers found great numbers of beaver in eastern Canada and claimed the area for France. This became the center for the fur trade in the New World. The French also explored along the Mississippi River and established settlements like New Orleans and Mobile.

8 Effects on Natives De Soto and other Spanish explorers brought horrible diseases that devastated the Native American population. Some of the diseases included smallpox, influenza, measles, and chicken pox. The natives had no resistance to the diseases. Entire villages were wiped out at a time. Societies vanished, assimilation Steel Weapons/horses Survivors form modern tribes like Creek and Cherokee
