1 Soil Presented by Michelle Scarpace,
UW-Stevens Point, Kansas State University

2 What is soil? Organic material at the surface of the Earth
Natural body composed of liquid, gases and minerals which supply nutrients

3 What is soil made of? Soil textures: Sand Silt Clay

4 Soil Texturing -Activity: Soil Texturizing
Have students texturize soils. Go around to each group and show them how to texture and describe how different each texture feels

5 What does soil do? Grow Food What kinds of food?

6

7 What do soils do? Filter Water
As water moves through soil, the particles pick up and hold on to particles in the water Water is cleaned as it moves through the soil, so we can drink it. How does soil move through water? How can soil filter contaminants? Activity: Water movement and contaminant removal Activity where students stand in different positions to replicate different soil textures. The instructors will be water to show how it is easy for water to move through sand because it is a bigger particle than clay. Suggested activity: Next activity: put Kool-aide through sand and a loam. Kool aide is a contaminant and it will be filtered out through a loam soil.

8 What do Soils do? Support Buildings

9 What do soils do? Support animal life
Five to 10 tons of animal life can live in an acre of soil.

10 How are soils formed? Parent Material
Most of Wisconsin’s soils formed from material laid down by glaciers Till Outwash Lacustrine Weathered Bedrock Loess Slide can be tailored by state…

11 Other factors that affect soils
Organisms What kind of organisms live in the soil?

12

13 Benefits of Organisms in Soil
Supply organic matter Mix soil Erosion control by holding soil in place

14 Other Factors that affect soils
Topography: Slope Steep slopes have more erosion Material is disappearing faster than it is forming Aspect: direction of the slope North facing slopes are cooler and wetter than south facing slopes

15 Climate Climate influences the amount of time soil takes to develop
Precipitation creates soil – more precipitation results in faster development Too much rain results in erosion – bad for the landscape

16 Time 100+ years to form 1 inch

20 The UN Declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils (IYS) to bring more attention to this important natural resource. The Soil Science Society of America celebrates IYS and is happy to bring you this presentation. We hope you take the time to learn more about soils at the many resources listed at the end of this presentation, as you learn more about how… Soils Sustain Life
