6. Receive
All the people gathered together into the square before the Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had given to Israel. Accordingly, the priest Ezra brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear with understanding. He read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday.
Then Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, ‘Amen, Amen’, lifting up their hands.

7. Engage
The time of Nehemiah ( a governor of Israel) was a time of rebuilding after the return of the people from captivity in Babylon.
After they rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem the priest, Ezra, was asked to bring out the holy scriptures and read them to the people.
Standing before the assembled people he read the scriptures, the first time they had been read in Jerusalem for many years.
It is not always easy to be part of a group of people, with different personalities and opinions. The scriptures include instructions to enable the people to live and work together peacefully and productively.

In what ways could a community support individuals, to be a productive member of that community?
Is it only the role of the leader to encourage other members of the community?
Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?”
Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair.
Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student.
Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.

Think of a project that your form could carry out to help develop its sense of community.
