1 Five College JSTOR DDA Pilot
Leslie Horner Button Associate Director for Library Services UMass Amherst Libraries June 26, 2016

2 Five College Consortium

3 Context Total Student FTE: >36,000
Amherst (AC) ,792 Hampshire (HA) ,492 Mount Holyoke (MH) ,189 Smith (SM) ,760 UMass (UM) 27,800 Long tradition of cooperation (40+ years) Shared online catalog YBP print approvals plans at MH, Smith and UMass Policy to avoid unintentional monographic duplication

4 Wading into the DDA pool
Motivators and goals: Expand e-resource access Increase available titles across consortium Awareness that 40% of print monographs purchased in recent years do not circulate 24/7 access Distance education programs (UM) Buy what faculty/students use not what they might use Streamline workflow Budget constraints not a consideration when starting pilot!

5 Why JSTOR Informed by experience with EBL DDA pilot
JSTOR program aligned with desired ‘features’: DRM free No STLs; purchases triggered by use High quality content ILL at chapter-level Stable content Availability of MARC records

6 Launch – September 2015 Allocated $25K for initial pool funding through existing cost-sharing model (11ths formula) Loaded over 40,000 records into catalog/discovery systems mid-September Imprints – 2005+ De-duplicated against EBL DDA records, but not against print or ebrary Academic Complete

7 User Response? No promotion Wildly popular!
Spent initial pool in 1st 6 weeks (yikes!) Initially Smith had highest use eventually surpassed by UMass

8 JSTOR Use as of May 2016*

9 Purchases and Costs

10 JSTOR Expenditures by Institution

11 Adjustments and Desire Enhancements
Expended $117,081 (Sep 2015-May 2016) Spending much higher than anticipated: how to adjust to manage that! Administrative interface for JSTOR ebooks (in development) to expand ability to analyze use Notification process when content removed No multiplier but required to purchase 5 copies

12 Next Steps Pilot to continue for another semester
May need to adjust ‘profile’ to manage spending Re-evaluate consortia cost-sharing formula Await administrative dashboard – want to analyze use via Tableau by subject, institution, and more! JSTOR overlap analysis of print holdings an e- books in pool – want to better understand user preference

13 Recommendations Be clear about goals
Ask for expenditure estimates to plan budget Assess use to inform adjustments Be willing to adjust as needed!

14 Questions?? *Thanks to Rachel Lewellen, UMass Amherst Libraries Assessment Librarian, for tableau analysis and visualization graphs
