6 Sam’s New Year’s Money Resolution
One of Sam’s favourite times of the year is the very beginning because he gets to choose what his New Year’s Resolution will be. Last year, Sam decided that he would only eat sweets at the weekend and not after school, he found this resolution pretty difficult! This year Sam’s New Year’s Money Resolution is to save £2.00 of his pocket money EVERY WEEK! He knows this resolution will be a challenge but if he can keep to it he hopes he might be able to afford a big lego set at the end of the year! NB: You can decide as a class on the amount of money Sam should save a week.

7 Sam has asked his mum to help him create a savings record so that he can keep track of how much money he has. Every week he puts his money into his money box. Each time he puts his money in his money box he writes down the amount in his savings record. Sam has set himself some savings goals, he thinks that having lots of smaller goals will help him to achieve his bigger savings goal at the end of the year. How much do you think Sam has planned to save by the end of Week 8?

8 Sam’s Savings Record... Week Number Pocket money paid in Total Total:
£2.00 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8 Total: £2.00 £2.00 £4.00 Nb: You can change the amounts depending on the amount of pocket money that the class think Sam should save a week.

9 Kim’s New Year’s Money Resolution
Kim really wants to learn to roller skate. Her dad has said he won’t buy her roller skates because she still hasn’t played with the scooter that they bought her for her birthday. Kim has decided that her New Year’s Money Resolution this year will be to save her pocket money instead of spending it straight away. If she can keep her resolution then she can buy a pair of roller skates later in the year. She has seen a pair in the shop for £ Each week Kim gets £1.50 pocket money and 80p for doing chores.

10 Kim’s first goal of the year is the Easter holidays because she really wants to have her roller skates so she can go to the park with her friends. Kim knows it’s not always easy to save all of her money so she has decided to only save her pocket money and if she wants to she can spend the money she earns from doing chores. She has created a savings record with a big star by the Easter Holidays. She knows that she will get £10.00 for birthday money so she has added this to her savings record. How many weeks will it take Kim to save enough money for her roller skates? If there was a sale and the price of the roller skates dropped to £20.00, how many weeks would Kim need to save for before she could buy her skates?

11 Kim’s Savings Record... Week Number Money paid in Total Week 1 £1.50
£10.00 Week 12

12 Keeping resolutions... New Year’s Money Resolutions are not always easy to keep, there are so many things to tempt Sam and Kim into spending their pocket money. Do you think it will be easy for Sam and Kim to save all of their pocket money each week? Do you think there might be some weeks when Sam or Kim might spend some of their pocket money instead of saving it all? Do you think that keeping a savings record will help Sam and Kim?

13 My New Year’s Money Resolution
Create a New Year’s Money Resolution by choosing... A). A Spend Less, Save or Give card AND B). A Pocket Money card + Spend Less £1 e.g.) I will spend less than £1 a week
