The KSDE is in the very early stages of developing a web application designed to gather regular feedback on all of the content standards, feedback on issues such as (1) district-level challenges to implementation, (2) grade-level content appropriateness, and (3) content breadth, depth, and rigor.
The application will allow the KSDE to query feedback and if necessary respond to suggestions.
Kansas law requires a review of the standards every seven years as opposed to a revision.  Nothing prevents the state from making refinements or revisions to standards on a more regular basis. Obviously, in the case of assessed standards, some decision will have to be made regarding what standards are measured, but this shouldn’t create a situation in which standards remain static for almost a decade without input. Furthermore, the state should feel free to engage in a review of standards without feeling compelled to make changes if changes aren’t necessary.
The norm in Kansas has been to convene a standards committee every seven years, the result being a wholesale revision (not review) of the standards. This revision in turn creates a need for new assessments, new curriculum, new professional development, etc.
The KSDE’s hope is to break the cycle of a complete revision of standards and assessments that is driven by a calendar date rather than necessary substantive changes.
