1 Types of solutions

2 Types of Solutions & the Direction of Water Movement:
hypertonic – the fluid outside the cell has a higher concentration of particles (or less water molecules) than the inside of the cell therefore, water molecules leave the cell and the cell shrinks hypotonic – the fluid outside the cell has a lower concentration of particles (or more water molecules) than the inside of the cell therefore, water molecules enter the cell and the cell swells isotonic – the fluid inside and outside of the cell have the same concentration of particles and free water molecules, water molecules move in both directions

3 Types of Solutions hypotonic isotonic hypertonic Cell Swells
10% Salt 10% Salt 20% Salt 20% Salt 10% Salt 10% Salt Lower concentration of particles (or more water molecules) outside the cell. Equal concentration of particles (and water molecules) inside and outside the cell. Higher concentration of particles (or less water molecules) outside the cell. Cell Swells Cell Stays the Same Cell Shrinks

4 Effects of Hypotonic, Isotonic, and Hypertonic Solutions
50 % Salt 50% H2O 60% Sugar 40% H2O 40% Oxygen 60% H2O 10 % Salt 90% H2O 30% Sugar 70% H2O 40% Oxygen 60% H2O or Swells or Shrinks

5 Turgid – swollen; the cell wall keeps the cell from bursting
40% Solute 30% Solute 70% Solute 40% Solute 60% Solute 30% Solute Shrinks 20% Solute 30% Solute 50% Solute 10% Solute 40% Solute 30% Solute Turgid – swollen; the cell wall keeps the cell from bursting Turgid Normal Shrinks

6 Beaker 1 This diagram shows the cell in a(n) hypotonic / hypertonic / isotonic solution. Will osmosis occur? If so, in what direction will osmosis occur? Will the cell shrink or swell? Hypotonic YES Into cell Swell/Lyse/Burst

7 Beaker 2 This diagram shows the cell in a(n) hypotonic / hypertonic / isotonic solution. Will osmosis occur? If so, in what direction will osmosis occur? Will the cell shrink or swell? Hypertonic YES Outside of cell Shrink

8 Beaker 3 This diagram shows the cell in a(n) hypotonic / hypertonic / isotonic solution. Will osmosis occur? If so, in what direction will osmosis occur? Will the cell shrink or swell? Isotonic YES Both Stays same

9 1. Name the type of solution (hypertonic, isotonic, hypotonic). 2
1. Name the type of solution (hypertonic, isotonic, hypotonic). 2. Draw an arrow to show which way the water will move by osmosis. 3. State what will happen to the cell. 50% solute 12% solute Cell Swells Cell Shrinks 10% solute 37% solute Hypotonic Hypertonic Type of Solution: ___________ Type of Solution: ___________
