Trudi Frazel, MSW Child Welfare Trainer & Coach

2 Agenda Welcome, Introductions, Group Agreements
Brief overview of main components/themes of SOP Using SOP skills/strategies in the training room Debrief Plus/Delta, Evaluations

3 Introductions Introduce yourself to someone you haven’t met yet: Name
Where you live/work One thing you’ve learned so far at the conference One thing you’re hoping to learn in this workshop

4 Group agreements In groups of 3-4, talk about how you establish group agreements in the training room: Scale yourself in terms of your level of effort on co-creating agreements with your participants. What are some agreements you always try to include? What agreements are you proposing for us today?

5 What is “technology”? From Wikipedia: From Merriam-Webster:
It “is the collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives…” From Greek: techne = “art, skill, cunning of hand” logia = science, knowledge From Merriam-Webster: the practical application of knowledge especially in a particular area a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge

6 SOP Overview Based on the work of Andrew Turnell, Sonja Parker, Nicki Weld, Maggie Greening, Sue Lorhbach, and many others Set of skills, tools, and strategies for child welfare that: Increase engagement with the goal of developing good working relationships Increase critical thinking Enhance children’s daily safety

7 Safety, defined: Actions of protection taken by the caregiver that directly address the danger and are demonstrated over time. Adapted from Boffa, J., & Podesta, H. (2004) Partnership and risk assessment in child protection practice, Protecting Children, 19(2): 36–48. Turnell, Andrew & Susie Essex Working with Denied Child Abuse, Open University Press, 2006.

8 The Power of Three Three “buckets” Three Gems: Three Questions
Harm, Risk/Danger, and Safety Goal Statements Three Questions Three Houses

9 SOP’s “Three Buckets” GOOD WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Solution-focused conversations Strategies for talking with children Appreciative inquiry Cultural humility Trauma informed practice CRITICAL THINKING Safety Mapping SDM Tools ENHANCING SAFETY Harm and Risk/Danger Statements Well-formed safety goals Building safety networks Partnership-based collaborative planning

10 What are we worried about?
Three Questions What are we worried about? What is working well? What needs to happen next?

11 Solution Focused Questions
Exception Coping Scaling Relationship Preferred Future

12 Orienting the Network Key Question What the question is trying to do
Potential applications for use in training Why are we meeting? “Why” is about purpose. (Ensuring everyone understands and agrees why we are meeting) Learning objectives Jurisdictional context/goals for the training What are we trying to accomplish? “What” is about desired outcomes. (Going from the overall goal to the specific tasks for that day) Assessing what participants want/need from the training (in real time) How are we going to work together? “How” is about group agreements Co-creating group agreements to ensure safe learning environments Adapted from NCCD, SOP Module 8, Orienting the Network, 2012

13 Jargon-Free Language RFA CCR SDM CFT TDM CQI CWS/CMS …

14 Amplifying the voice of the child/family
In the midst of initiative overload, it is easy to lose sight of our true purpose … WHO ARE WE REALLY HERE FOR?

15 Checking for Feedback:
Plus/Delta Can allow lively groups a space to blow off steam Model good practice by signaling that feedback is welcome, even if critical Seeks to share power

16 Conclusion: Building YOUR Network!
What are you currently doing -- and what would you like to be doing -- in these areas? Collaborating with others Seeking support in skill development

17 What has this got you thinking about?
Debrief What has this got you thinking about? What is one thing you heard today that was worth your time? What is one thing you would like to incorporate into your training? If you incorporated that thing into your training, what kind of difference would it make?

18 Plus/Delta What did you like? What would you change?
