1 Welcome to Session 4: Peace
Virtue:

2 Lighting the Candle Prayer
Agenda Lighting the Candle Prayer As we light this flame, we light the flames of Love, Peace, Truth, Right Conduct, and Non- violence that lie within us all. ∞ Opening Ceremony ∞ Lighting the Candle Prayer ∞ Forbearance Prayer ∞ Announcements ∞ Newcomers welcome ∞ Date of next meeting ∞ Facilitator for next study session ∞ Checking in on month of Peacefulness ∞ Lesson ∞ Closing

3 Forbearance Prayer Let us have forbearance towards each other
Let us rejoice together Let us all strive together Let us live and move in harmony Let us grow together Let us cherish the wisdom that we have acquired Let us live in complete harmony without misunderstanding May all beings in the worlds be happy Namaste, we honor the goodness in each other

4 Peace and Patience Wise Saying: “Another’s anger cannot be defeated by your anger. It can be tamed only by your patience and tolerance.”

5 Questions: This wise saying is about the Human Value of Peace – how to become a more peaceful person. The Virtue or sub-Value in this saying is ‘patience.’ ∞ Who can tell us what the word ‘patience’ means? ∞ What does it mean to be ‘patient’?....with others? …...with ourselves?

6 Now let’s look at the first part of the wise saying, ‘Another’s anger cannot be defeated by our anger.’ ∞ Who would like to tell us in their own words what this saying means? ∞ What happens when we get angry back at someone who is angry at us?

7 The second part of the wise saying says, ‘another’s anger can only be tamed by our patience and tolerance.’ ∞ What does the word ‘tamed’ mean? (ex., what does the ‘lion tamer’ in a circus do?) ∞ So what does it mean to ‘tame’ another person’s anger?

8 ∞ What does it mean to be ‘patient and tolerant’ when someone is angry at us?
∞ What would a ‘patient’ person say or do with someone who is angry with him/her? ∞ How would a ‘tolerant’ person behave with someone who is angry at them?

9 Illustration: Think about this:
If you throw a ball at a brick wall, it will bounce back to you; but if you throw it at a pillow, that’s where it stops. So when someone gets angry at you, be a ‘pillow,’ not a brick wall.

10 Illustration: To put out a fire, we don’t throw petrol on it; we use water. If we get angry when someone gets angry at us, it’s like throwing petrol on a fire. In contrast, if we respond to an angry person with patience and tolerance, this is like spraying water on the fire.

11 ∞ How do we benefit by being patient and tolerant when someone is being angry with us?
∞ What would the whole world be like if all of us learned to be patient and tolerant with an angry person? ∞ What would our family be like…..

12 Guided Imagination

13 Affirmation for reflection and contemplation: “Every day I am more tolerant and patient”
Write an action plan how you would like to apply this saying in your life and how to be more tolerant and patient.

14 Closing Prayer May we feel the stillness of peace and the cool calmness of patience in every cell and atom of our being. May we engage in and embrace the soothing balm of patience and allow moments of anger presented to us from within and without to serve as gifts of perfecting this practice for ourselves and the world.
