1 Fraction Party MAFS.5.NF1.2 Students will be able to solve word problems using addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators. Students will use fraction models to justify their answers.

2 Let’s work through this together:
Carson and Cooper are cooking dinner for a dinner party with friends. They want to make some biscuits to have with dinner. The recipe calls for flour. Carson gets cup of flour. Cooper gets cup of flour. How much flour do they have together?

3 At your tables, use your fraction strips to
show the following: Emily and Sarah are asked to join Carson and Cooper for the party. They want to bring dessert. They have been wanting to make a strawberry pie recipe for the longest time. Emily brought cups of strawberries and Sarah brought cups of strawberries. How many cups of strawberries do they have to create their yummy dessert?

4 At your tables, use your fraction strips to show the following:
Indie was also invited. She brought the steaks. She found a sale on steaks and bought pounds of steak to bring. While she was getting ready, her dog ate pounds of the steaks. How much does she have left to bring to the party?

5 See how well you can do this one on your own:
Kate and Ruby wanted to bring apples to the party. They bought pounds of apples. There were horses next door to Carson and Cooper’s house, so they decided to feed some apples to the horse. By the time they finished, they had fed the horse pounds of apples. How many apples did they have left to bring to the party?

6 Emerson wanted to bring 2 1 5 pounds of shrimp to the party
Emerson wanted to bring pounds of shrimp to the party. She got hungry and ate pounds. How many pounds of shrimp does she have left to bring to the party?

7 Answers to lesson word problems:
Carson and Cooper: cup of flour cup of flour = cup of flour. Emily and Sarah: cups of strawberries cups of strawberries = 4 cups of strawberries. Indie: pounds of steak pounds of steak = pounds of steak. Kate and Ruby: pounds of apples pounds of apples = pounds of apples. Emerson: pounds of shrimp – pounds of shrimp = pounds of shrimp.
