1 Forensics Chapter 3 – Hair

2 Figure drawing and coloring Use CH 3 book to complete the worksheet
Warm up: What type of evidence is hair? Class? Individual? Biotic, abiotic? Warm up Hair and fibers notes Figure drawing and coloring Use CH 3 book to complete the worksheet Bring up when done to be checked Begin chapter 3 (hair) and chapter 4 (fibers) outline if time allows Objective: Be able to describe the anatomy of hair.

3 Figure drawing and coloring Use CH 3 book to complete the worksheet
Warm up: What type of evidence is hair? Class? Individual? Biotic, abiotic? Hair and fibers notes Figure drawing and coloring Use CH 3 book to complete the worksheet Begin chapter 3 (hair) and chapter 4 (fibers) outline if time allows Objective: Be able to describe the anatomy of hair.

4 1. Complete Figure drawing and coloring from last class
Use CH 3 book to complete the worksheet 2. chapter 3 and 4 outlines in your packet using the textbook 3. Hair Lab Intro: Read pages S1-S7 Answer the questions on page S8 Objective: Be able to describe the anatomy of hair.

5 Hair and fiber lab part 1 – Complete data table 1 & 2
Warm up: How do you carry a microscope? How do you determine the magnification of the microscope? How do you focus a microscope? When should you NOT use the coarse adjustment knob? How do you carry a slide? Agenda: Intro to microscope Hair and fiber lab part 1 – Complete data table 1 & 2 View each of the fibers under the microscope and complete table 1 (skip thickness) Your sketches should be neat and detailed and colored!! Table 2 Burn test Page S17 analysis question 1 Continue working on figure drawing or any unfinished work. Objective: To understand the importance of microscopes to forensic science. Introduction to analysis techniques used to process evidence.

6 Complete Table 3 on page S15.
Warm up: Describe the different possible medulla patterns and what information you could interpret from them. Hair and Fibers Lab part 3 Complete Table 3 on page S15. View 5 different samples of human hair. View 5 different samples of animal hair. (SKIP medullary index and scale pattern and thickness unless obviously very thick/thin) FORM refers to whether the hair appears curly / straight etc To determine MEDULLA PATTERN - Look at your chapter 3 figure to determine To determine MEDULLA STRUCTURE – look at figure 4 in the intro section of your lab handout Objective: Students will make observations about fibers, human and animal hair. They will later use these observations to analyze and identify unknowns.

7 View 5 different samples of human hair.
SKIP medullary index and scale pattern and thickness unless obviously very thick/thin) FORM refers to whether the hair appears curly / straight etc MEDULLA PATTERN - Look at your chapter 3 figure 3-5 to determine MEDULLA STRUCTURE – look at figure 4 in the intro section of your lab handout Table 3 View 5 different samples of human hair. View 5 different samples of animal hair. Table 4 - View and identify the unknowns to bring up your table to be checked by me. Work on analysis lab questions If you finish lab, turn it in and begin ch 3 and 4 outline Objective: Students will make observations about fibers, human and animal hair. They will later use these observations to analyze and identify unknowns.

8 Describe how to identify an animal hair vs a human hair.
Warm up: Describe how to identify an animal hair vs a human hair. Agenda: Analysis questions #1 – Research by searching “Fiber Analysis” on google #6 – must use online research to answer #8 – Classify each as natural or synthetic THEN research what it comes from using pages In the text book ex: COTTON  Natural plant fiber FROM the seed pod #10 – use pages 59 and 63 in the textbook Objective: To understand the importance of microscopes to forensic science. Introduction to analysis techniques used to process evidence.

9 2. TEST MONDAY - ALL WORK due before test
Warm up: Describe how to identify an animal hair vs a human hair. Agenda: TODAY AND THURSDAY COMPLETE any unfinished lab work Assessment questions (pass in lab packet when done) unit 3 packet (ACM/drawings/outline) crosswords/study guide 2. TEST MONDAY - ALL WORK due before test Objective: To understand the importance of microscopes to forensic science. Introduction to analysis techniques used to process evidence.

10 Organize your work according to the assignment list on the board.
Warm up: Organize your work according to the assignment list on the board. Look over your review packets to identify any questions you may have. Agenda: Kahoot Turn in Lab, unit 3 hair packet Quiz DNA case study FF – Hair of the dog Objective: To understand the importance of microscopes to forensic science. Introduction to analysis techniques used to process evidence.
