you’re hoping to discuss? Examples How much screen time is OK? What age should kids begin using social media? What’s the right age to get my kid a cell phone? How can I tell if an app is really good for learning? Examples come from Common Sense Media. You will hear me refer to that often b/c it is a reliable resource for Media Literacy information, especially for parents. Handouts on examples

Digital Citizenship Under the Digital Citizenship umbrella fall these 8 topics which we’re going to explore with some examples from various grade levels.

Strategies to help us be safe users of the internet
STRANGER DANGER! Strategies to help us be safe users of the internet Green, Yellow, Red light These are key point covered in Internet Safety. For example: Kindergarten Lesson– Going Places Safely This lesson equates going places with parents – there are rules. Stay with parent, don’t talk to strangers Video – Jeremiah takes students on an online adventure – 3 rules. 1. Ask a parent first before going. 2 Stay in places just right for you Only talk to people you know. We then take an online visit to the San Diego Zoo – visit baby animals. Example of a good place that is just right for us. Older grades – 2nd Topic advances into sharing information online – private v. personal Upper grades Cyberbullying and what you can do if it happens to you.

With each post , you are building a digital footprint
Self reflect before you self reveal Learn to respect privacy of others. These are the key points addressed in Digital Footprint and Reputation. Digital Footprint – starts being introduced in 2nd grade Talk about being respectful online 3rd grade Power of words and how things said can be hurtful or easily misunderstood 5th grade Privacy and how posting online can stay there forever.

Identify strategies for creating strong passwords Spot online scams
Why do companies collect information? Key points in Privacy & Security 2nd grade Start talking about the importance of passwords and that they are private. Exercise where we create our own passwords and visit a site for kids that will create passwords for them – shows what good passwords look like.

Reflect on how the Internet allows for anonymity and deception
How do you express yourself through digital media Key points for Self-Image & Identity. Examples: teach students how to look critically at websites for the real meaning. Example – advertisements. 4th grade Lesson on called Picture Perfect. Video shows how pictures can be digitally altered – turns an attractive model into someone amazingly beautiful using time lapse photography– advertisement 2nd grade Lesson – Things for sale – Look at different websites – Crayola and Webkins, discuss how even though they have games, they also want you to buy their products.

Learn to identify, respond to, and limit the negative impact of cyberbullying and other unethical or harmful online behaviors Recognize your own role in escalating or de-escalating online cruelty as upstanders, rather than bystanders. Key points for Cyberbullying and Digital Drama. Cyberbullying is addressed in the upper grades. Although we do stress to younger children that if anything pops up that makes you feel uncomfortable, turn it off and tell an adult. 4th and 5th Grades 1st 2 lessons are taught online in game form after introduction and discussion. 4th grade – the Power of Words Twalkers – gives short scenarios and if you capture the correct responses, build a character called an Upstander. Rather than being a Bystander and not doing anything to help. Also Reinforced in 5th grade.

Become a good digital citizen This category addresses etiquette. For example: Even in KINDERGARTEN – kids know what is – practice reading s to see if they are polite and what we could say to make them polite 2nd grade Discuss How we show respect online – How communication is different from face-to-face to online and how when someone can’t see our faces, we need to make our communication clear

Ability to identify, find, evaluate, and use information effectively
Evaluate quality, credibility, and validity of websites This is so important – kids (and some adults) often take what they read online at face-value. The children learn that ANYONE can post anything online and say they are an expert. For example: 1st grade Lessons – Sites I Like – Learn about website evaluation Evaluation form with Smiley and Frowny faces that look critically at a website to answer such questions as how good are the pictures, subject, do links work? 5th grade Actually find and read the About Us and Privacy Rules sections of websites and learn to evaluate who is behind this information and what are they going to do with my information.

Learn about rights copyrighted work Understand piracy and plagiarism
Notetaking, Copyright and Plagiarism – lessons the Media Center have taught for years. But the Digital Citizenship lessons offers some information in different ways. Some examples: 4th grade Learns when citations should be used and the different kinds of media that should be cited if you borrow from it 5th grade Online Lesson – Mix-n-Mash Practice creating a video project – with – pictures, titles, and music – has them practice citing the sources for each kind of media.

Responsibility Respect
This is relevant not only to use of the internet, but also the actual physical device. We are trying to instill in the kids the importance of taking care of their devices.
