1 Section 2: Atoms and Compounds
Electrons – negative charge Protons – positive charge Neutrons – no charge Defined by number of protons. Like charges repel Opposite charges attract Element Defined by number of protons 114 different types Compound Two or more elements combined. Can be separated by breaking bonds.

2 Demo: Static electricity balloon demos

3 Periodic Table: Display properties and structure of elements
Periodic Table: Display properties and structure of elements. (label: groups, period, metals, metalloids, nonmetals)

4 Periodic Table Terms: Period: Go across the periodic table and indicates the number of energy levels. Group: Go down the periodic table and categorize elements that have similar chemical properties. Atomic Symbol: Represent the corresponding element. Example, aluminum is “Al”

5 Molecules: Composed of two or more atoms making an electrically neutral single structure.

6 Crystals: Repeating structure of atoms or molecules.

7 Polymer: Repeating structures of atoms that make long strands..

8 Allotropes: When an element forms different structures.
Ex) Oxygen: Ex) Carbon: Graphite, diamond, buckeyball

9 Isotopes: When an atom varies in the number of neutrons.

10 Chemical Reaction: 3Fe + 4H2O  Fe3O4 + 4H2 + Energy
Law of conservation of mass: Activation Energy: Energy to start reaction Exothermic Reaction: Reactions that release energy. Endothermic Reaction: Reactions that absorb energy.

11 Exploring Further: Reaction activity with k’nex.

12 Videos: Deuterium: Nano-tubes:

13 Warm-up: How many protons and electrons does Na have?
How many energy levels does Ag have? Which subatomic particles repel from each other?
