3. A School Baseline not Reception Baseline
Schools can now sign up to use the new school baseline assessment being introduced as part of the changes the DfE is making to indicate how primary schools are held to account.
Baseline will not measure progress in EYFS.
The baseline aim is to measure progress long term across the school: How effective is your school at developing children’s learning from Reception to Year 6?
Helps move our understanding further by calling it a school baseline not Reception baseline.
It is your schools baseline that just happens to take place in the Reception class, at that point in the child’s education.
It will not primarily measure progress in Reception.
To do that a school will have to continue to use other systems.
Its aim is to measure progress long term.
View it as another, slightly bonkers DfE initiative, that has to be performed in the first half term. Keep it separate from EYFS teaching and learning.
Continue all those systems as normal. Will need them to measure progress effectively towards all 17 ELG’s for Ofsted.
EYFS Profile that is becoming non statutory, not the ELG’s.

4. New School Baseline
It may be helpful to view the School Baseline as a separate issue from EYFS learning and attainment
Therefore, there is still a need for on entry judgements at the beginning of Reception against the Early Years Outcomes and continual assessment and tracking to show children’s progress.
The SIMS EY Termly Tracking marksheets, grids and analysis tools will assist in this endeavour.

5. The School Baseline - Timeline
Early List of DfE approved base lines published.
September 2015 – New base lines available to trial.
September 2016 – EYFS Profile becomes non – statutory, [but not the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) – end of EYFS.]
September Base lines to be used in first half term.
September 2022 – First data set in Year 6 against base line 2016.

Pauline Goldrick & Sam Rosser of the Babcock Early Years Team have arranged 3 Baseline briefing sessions on: Thursday 19th March at Silvermere Golf Club, 9.30, 12 noon and 2.30 pm. If head teachers and assessment leaders would like to know more about selecting a base line provider, please attend the briefings. The briefing sessions have just been released on CPD online.

8. Message from Babcock EYFS Team – Select a Baseline to trial cautiously.
Baseline companies have got to secure 10% of schools nationally by end of April 2015
If they don’t they can’t participate in the pilot.
This will mean lots of Baseline marketing aimed at schools.
Consider
Will your school be tied into a contract?
IT capability, cost or training implications.
Don’t be rushed into making a decision by the end of April. You can still sign up for a baseline trial throughout the summer term.

Introduction of Baseline September 2016.
Two systems to operate at the same time – new baseline is trialling only.

10. Early Years Foundation Stage ~ SIMS resources for half termly tracking
Key Points:
Resources are named EY TT not EY FS – check which version you are using – you could be missing out on new features.
EY TT can track attainment and progress for all pupils from birth through all ages and stages into expected levels for Nursery & Reception
The resources are available to download from the Babcock 4S website.

Progress Calculation Marksheets.
Tracking Grids for both attainment and progress.
Aspect analysis for attainment and progress.

17. Assessment without Levels (AWL)
In September 2014 the Babcock Suite of Primary Assessment Resources was distributed to Schools via the HT. A subsequent SIMS guide was sent out in December.
These resources are for assessment of reading, writing and mathematics at KS1 and KS2.
These materials can be used to make assessments, capture current attainment and also demonstrate progress over the year.
They are offered as tools and guidance to help with the process of moving to assessment of the new curriculum.

18. Assessment without Levels (AWL)
A new SIMS tracking system has been developed, to be used alongside the Babcock Suite of Assessment materials which is based on 7 stages of development, reaching mastery/surpassing at the end of each year.
Assessment Manager allows you to use existing pupil data, FSM, SEN, EAL, etc., in order to track pupils’ progress against the new curriculum.
Data Entry Marksheets, Tracking Grids and Analysis Grids enable the user to track pupil progress – examples follow on next slides.

Data entered in ‘Data Entry’ marksheets automatically displays in a Tracking Grid, and shows the names of pupils at each stage on a half termly basis.

This grid displays progress using EYFS prior attainment data. It can be generated as soon as half termly assessments have been entered in the Data Entry marksheet.

25. AWL ~ Attainment Group Analysis
Standard SIMS groups are automatically updated as data is amended in SIMS, for example, changes to SEN status, FSMs eligibility, EAL pupils or Disadvantaged Pupils. Dynamic Groups can be generated from SIMS Discover, e.g. Non Sen.
