1 Prepositional Phrases
English 10

2 PREPOSITION A preposition tells the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in a sentence. A pad is under the carpet. (The preposition, under, tells where the pad is in relation to the carpet.) Our vacation was like a dream.

3 How to remember prepositions
A preposition is “Anywhere a mouse can go.” Think of a little mouse, scurrying around. It goes over, under, above, below, in, out, etc. Remember, “Anywhere a mouse can go.”

4 Create a prepositional phrase
To create a prepositional phrase, take a PREPOSITION and START your sentence with it. Notice the placement of the comma (after the end of the introductory phrase).

5 IMPORTANT! Use a prepositional phrase as a SENTENCE STARTER!!
This is called an “Introductory Phrase”.

6 For example: Under the covers, the little girl hid from the monster.
Over the river and through the woods, to grandmother’s house we go. Above the goal, the shot soared. We lost the game! Into the net, the ball was drilled. We won the game!

7 ALWAYS DO THE ELIMINATION CHECK!!!

8 Please look at the next page in your packet to see some examples of prepositions.
Notice there are some words that do not fit the “Anywhere a mouse can go” rule.
