1 Unit 3 Test Day

2 Bell Ringer Does anyone have any last minute questions before we start off on the test?

3 Teacher Review What traits separates tuna from lampreys on this cladogram? What traits separate lampreys from leopards?

4 Zeke trims the apical meristem at the top of the plants in his garden
Zeke trims the apical meristem at the top of the plants in his garden. Which of the following would result from Zeke trimming the tops of his plants? (hint: Ms. T’s class think about the sugar daddy story...) A. Photosynthesis will increase in the leaves B. The plant will die C. The cells will rapidly divide in the axillary meristem, causing increased secondary growth D. The plant will stop producing ATP

5 Leaf cells exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during photosynthesis
Leaf cells exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. Which of the following conditions aids in the most efficient exchange of gases in leaf cells? A. The surfaces of these cells are moist and the stomata are open B. The surfaces of these cells are dry and the stomata are closed C. The surfaces of these cells are moist and the stomata are closed D. The surfaces of these cells are dry and the stomata are open

6 What are the major properties of water that allow water to travel up the stem against gravity?

7 What is a baby plant called?
Why is germination important?

8 Time to Take the Test Put everything away, you only need a pencil
All other belongings should be either on the lab benches or in the front of the class.

9 Structures of the heart

10 WHAT ARE WE LEARNING TODAY?
OBJECTIVE Describe the structure of the heart and explain how it pumps blood through the body.

11 What is the essential question?
-How does blood circulate around the body? -What are the parts of the heart?

12 Introduction Instructions Run in place for 30 seconds run hard and fast… Touch your chest what do you feel????

13 What is the Heartbeat? The movement of blood throughout your body is called circulation. Aerobic exercise requires more oxygen throughout the body, therefore you use more blood and pump it more. When you are sitting still, your heart pumps about 5 L of blood each time. When you are active, your heart pumps up to 35 L. Why do you think there is an increase?

14 Input Notes Today we will be writing down what is in RED

15 What are the Functions of the Circulatory System?
Transports O2 (oxygen), CO2 (carbon dioxide), nutrients, etc. to and from the cells of the body. Helps maintain a constant body temp. & homeostasis. Homeostasis = Equilibrium Carries cells that help protect the body from disease.

16 What is the Heart? The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. Show actual heart

17 Heart Anatomy Each half of the heart has an upper chamber (atrium) and lower chamber (ventricle). The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body. The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs to pick up O2. The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the body. Right atrium receives Deoxygenated blood from the body 4 pumps in one

18 Heart Anatomy Arteries carry oxygenated blood AWAY from heart.
Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood to LUNGS. Veins bring deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Pulmonary Vein carries oxygenated blood from lungs to left atrium. Right atrium recieves Deoxygenated blood from the body 4 pumps in one

19 Teacher point to parts of the heart and have students call them out and define their roles in the circulatory system.

20 What are the Blood Vessels?
As blood flows through the circulatory system, it moves through three types of blood vessels: Arteries Capillaries Veins

21 What are the arteries? Large & tough
Thick walls that help them withstand the powerful pressure produced when the heart contracts. Carry oxygenated blood AWAY from the heart to the tissues of the body Pulmonary artery = deoxygenated The aorta is the first of a series of arteries that carry the blood to the rest of the body. The largest arteries are about as thick as a thumb.

22 What are the capillaries vessels?
Walls are only one cell thick. Smallest of the blood vessels. Most are so narrow that blood cells must pass through them in single file. Bring O2 & nutrients to tissues Absorb CO2 & other waste from tissues

23 What are the veins? Return deoxygenated blood to heart.
Pulmonary vein = oxygenated As with arteries, the thin walls of veins contain connective tissue and smooth muscle. Large veins contain valves that keep blood moving toward the heart.

24 Path of blood vessels through the body:
Veins Heart Arteries Body (Capillaries)

25 Go With The Flow Procedures:
1. Follow teacher directions. 2. Begin the activity in a standing position at a station along the route taped to the floor. 3. Using the color circle representing the type of blood for your position, walk along your route and describe to the class what is happening at each stop. 4. Explain what route (blood vessel) must be followed to reach the next stop.

26 WE DO: “Go With The Flow” Part I RA RV LA LV CO2 O2 Pulmonary Vein

27 Exit Ticket Finish before the bell rings!
__c__ right atrium a. large vessels that take blood away from the heart to the body __h__ left ventricle b. carry deoxygenated blood to the lungs from the heart __f__ left atrium c. contracts and pumps deoxygenated blood into right ventricle _b___ right ventricle d. large vessels that bring deoxygenated blood to the heart ___g_ pulmonary veins e. smallest of blood vessels where substance exchange happens _d___ veins f. contracts and pumps oxygenated blood into left ventricle __a__ arteries g. contracts and pumps oxygenated blood to the body __e__ capillaries h. bring oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart __i__ pulmonary arteries i. contracts and pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs

28 Have a good Thanksgiving Break
Be safe don’t do anything I wouldn’t do :)
