5 Sustainability & Brand today
The packaging comes into focus of public opinion and political decisions Packaging is … …perceived as waste after use …considered as an essential component of the necessary disposal …subject of increasing legal regulations In consequence, this means for the Packaging Buyer… … Brandowners and retailers are increasingly sensitive in regard of the environmental performance of their packaging (ISO 14000) … they would like to publish a significant optimization … they wish to suspend the accusation not to use the best possible methods in terms of the manufacturing process, the production and disposal. 6 Sustainability & Brand today
In consequence, Packaging Buyers want to achieve : Reduction of waste Minimization of energy use Minimization of greenhouse gas emissions Improvement in production efficiency and in the environmental best practice Source:Pack Print Forum 2014 UPM Raflatac /Stefano Pistoni

7 Sustainability & Brand today
Sustainability for brandowners is significant communication opportunity to share their story and provide information for consumers who wish to make sustainable choices Enhance customer’s overall perception, especially environmental perception. Build their brand reputation as “environmentally oriented”. Improve their retailer scorecard, making the item preferred for stocking

8 Label Life What is the environmental impact of my label?
Is there a more sustainable option to my usual choice? How can I communicate my choice to the consumer ?

9 Introducing LabelLife – the most comprehensive LCA in the business
UPM Raflatac /Stefano Pistoni

10 Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) is used to assess the environmental impacts of a product
Measure Inputs Energy (fuel, gas) Electricity Water Raw material Converted in Outputs Emissions to air (GHG…) Emissions to water Waste

11 This knowledge is the basis of our EcoDesign approach to create more sustainable labels
Using the holistic EcoDesign approach, we at UPM Raflatac take environmental factors into consideration in everything we do. Knowing the most impactful steps of our labels’ lifecycle… ... we can focus on the right actions to create more sustainable labels.

12 What about the LCA of a label?
Study uses international ISO methodology. It has been developed with PE International and is consistent with the methodology used by large brand owners. It is the most comprehensive LCA in the labelling industry. Raw material sourcing (and quantities used), printing and end-of-life are the main impacts. Printing accounts for 10 to 45% of the impact, depending on the technology.

13 Using our LCA as a foundation, we have created the Label Life tool
Get the impacts 300+ products Data tailored for you Choose the right product(s) Select the quantity, from 1,000 to 1,000,000 m2 Choose the end of life scenario: landfill, incineration, recycling … and we provide the data!

14 Label Life provides reliable and relevant information that helps you: compare the impacts of different labelling options

15 A few examples of product LCA comparisons Internal

16 Product LCA comparison PP White 40 / RF 37 / PET23 vs
Product LCA comparison PP White 40 / RF 37 / PET23 vs. PE Cast White 85 / RP 37 / HD70 Water -37% Energy -39% CO2-Emissions -33% Change to PP (lighter than PE) as well as to HG45 (lighter than HD70). The amount of water used increases again due to the change from paper to PP – also liner is PP in this case. Mass Inputs: PE85: Face film 80 g/m2, Acrylic 30 g/m2, paper liner 64 g/m2 PP40: Face film 29 g/m2, acrylic 15 g/m2, pp liner 27 g/m2 Calculated without a credit for biogenic carbon stored in the product. With Co2 credit: – 25% Other impacts: Acidification Potential: -25% Eutrophication Potential: -35 % Photochem. Ozone Creation Potential: - 50 % Based on UPM Raflatac’s LCA study comparing PP White 40 / RF 37 / PET23 vs. PE Cast White 85 / RP 37 / HD70 when liner is landfilled at the product end of life. 11/15/2018

17 Replacing glassine liner by new PET 23 liner Multiprint White WSA-FSC / RP 30 / PET23 (landfilled) vs. Multiprint White WSA-FSC / RP 30 / WG85 (landfilled) Water -8% Energy -11% CO2-Emissions -18% The benefits in the LCA results come from lighter materials. There is also a weight difference on adhesive. Mass inputs: ECO65 = 65g RHR5= 13g HG45= 45g ECO200= 75g RH09= 18,5g HG65= 60g Based on UPM Raflatac’s LCA study comparing Multiprint White / RP 30 / PET23 and Multiprint White / RP 30 / WG85 when paper liner is landfilled at the product end of life. 11/15/2018

18 Thinner face, thinner liner Raflacoat Fit PEFC / RH 6 / HG45 PEFC vs
Thinner face, thinner liner Raflacoat Fit PEFC / RH 6 / HG45 PEFC vs. Raflacoat Plus PEFC / RH 9 / HG65 Water -15% Energy CO2-Emissions -13% The benefits in the LCA results come from lighter materials. There is also a weight difference on adhesive. Mass inputs: ECO65 = 65g RHR5= 13g HG45= 45g ECO200= 75g RH09= 18,5g HG65= 60g Based on UPM Raflatac’s LCA study comparing Raflacoat Fit PEFC / RH 6 / HG45 PEFC and Raflacoat Plus PEFC / RH 9 / HG65 when paper liner is recycled at the product end of life. 11/15/2018

19 Case history - Toni’s Freilandeier (Austria) Switch from Raflacoat 80 gsm/HG 65 to Raflacoat Fit 70/HG 45 Toni Hubmann declares that he is very happy with the way it suits his sustainability strategy: “And although the labels are thinner, we can’t see any difference. I'd even say that the print quality has improved.”  Internal
