4 Before You Read: (Pry Out Questions)
Step 1: Preview Step 2: Outline Step 3: Question Preview – Survey entire book Keep it short Look for familiar concepts Summaries Chapter headlines/section titles & paragraph headlines Look for recommended readings Determine strategy – skimming or all 9 steps Step 2: Outline Complex – take time to understand Section Titles & paragraphs serve as outline guides Use outline format for you Step 3: Question Before begin – what you want? Write down questions If irrelevant, ask what you want from school (jumping through hoops) Playful/creative questions Lots of time for some subjects

5 While You Read: (Root Up Answers)
Step 4: Focus (Read) Step 5: Flag Answers Read: Be conscious of where you are Avoid marathon sessions For difficult reading, set shorter goals To stay focused: (incorporate 3 learning styles) 1) visualize 2) Read out loud 3) Get a feel for the subject Underline: - Or Highlight ` Deface your books Purpose – create signals for reviewing also, involving hands is kinesthetic Underline or highlight sparingly – main ideas (usually first sentence) Write in the margins of your text – summaries & questions. Answer: Get answers to questions Visualize yourself in search of an answer

6 After You Read: (Recite, Review, and Review again)
Step 6: Recite Step 7: Review Step 8: Review Again Recite: Talk to yourself about what you have learned Look at each underlined point Do it in front of the mirror Practice on a friend Talk about it whenever you can (share with family is a way to involve them in your education) Review: First complete review within 24 hours May not be able to recall it, but you will relearn it faster second time around Review can be short Check comprehension at any point Review again: Review weekly or monthly – very short (keeps neural pathways more distinct) Conduct brief reviews while waiting – bus, in line at stores, etc. May need long reviews for complex information Schedule well in advance Primacy – recency effects (remember first & last)

7 Now, Apply These Principles
In your four temperament groups – You will present one of the following chapters Ch 8: Communicating Ch 9: Diversity Ch 10: Technology Ch 11: Health Ch 12: What’s Next? (Optional – if enough people)
