Our missions DEPS is both
a department within the ministry of culture and an agency of the French INS Fieldwork: cultural sectors at the widest range (i.e. not only public structures, “legitimate” forms of art,..) Collect, analyse and produce statistics on culture : participation, employment, public and private expenditure,… Using INS sources (LFS, AES, SILC,…) Producing our own data Collecting available data from our partners (local governments, agencies,...) Disseminate our publications to inform public debate

Keep measuring cultural participation
Currently a big issue for the department : measuring participation in a wide range of cultural activities (from museum and theatres, to knitting and tuning) Replacing these figures in a longitudinal perspective Covering digital practices Need for a household survey able to register actual participation (and non participation) Working on the 6th edition of the cultural participation survey (previous editions in 1973, 1981, 1988, 1998 and 2008)

Analysing public expenditure State But also local governments that are massive providers National accounts Importance of the 2012 ESSnet framework to define cultural sectors and occupations International trade Data deriving from various partners (employment agencies, professional organisations,...)

Necessary when measuring digital participation Limits of household surveys methodologies New data providers (mainly from the private sector) Working on an experimental survey on Web visitors But also developing an expertise on “traces” data: Consumption Platform data?
