Stereotypes Arab and Muslim are the same thing
-Arabs are people who speak Arabic as a native language and identify themselves as so; Muslims are those who practice the religion of Islam. The majority of Muslims live outside the Middle East. Islam is fundamentally different than Christianity/judaism -Muslims, Christians, and Jews worship the same god and respect the same prophets: Abraham, Noah, Moses, and Jesus etc All men in turbans are terrorists -Acts of terrorism are carried out by only a few. There is some contradiction about attacks carried out by Palestinian extremists, but there is still wide condemnation of attacks.
3
Stereotypes cont. Islam is violent
-Most Muslims condemn violence just as much as any non-Muslim and resent being presumed violent on the basis of a shared religion or a particular group: "Did Timothy McVeigh's bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City mean all Christians are terrorists?" Islam is oppressive towards women -in most middle eastern countries women have the right to agree to their marriage partner, the right to education, and a guaranteed share of family inheritance. In most Middle Eastern countries, to vote, work outside the home, and even run for office. The middle east is one huge sandy desert filled with camels, men in turbans, and women hidden by black clothing. -The Middle East and Islam are diverse societies, and more Muslims live in fertile plains and fishing villages than in deserts. Clothing and customs vary in different countries and depend on different variables.
