1 Lesson 11 Notes Protists

2 What we will look at: Amoeba Paramecium Euglena Volvox

3 Objectives Make a list of things you already know about microbes.
Observe four species of living microorganisms called protists and identify their animal-like and plant-like characteristics. Observe, draw, and estimate the length of four protists. Create a cartoon using an Amoeba, Euglena, or Paramecium as the main character. Read about the importance of microorganisms in history. Read about the kingdom Monera and its significance to humans.

4 Protists all have: Cytoplasm Nucleus
Reproduce asexually by cell division Vacuoles Food and water storage

5 B. Amoeboids PSEUDOPEDIA (false feet) .25 mm – 25 mm
For movement & trapping of food .25 mm – 25 mm Thin cell membranes Ectoplasm: excrete wastes, absorb O2, eliminate CO2 Endoplasm: within cytoplasm Live on aquatic plants, moist ground, or as parasites on animals Contractile vacuole: eliminates excess water

6

7

8 C. Ciliates: Paramecium
Single-celled Slipper-shaped Cilia: tiny hairs for movement and trapping of food Size of bacteria – 2 mm Oral groove: opening for food & bacteria Contractile vacuole

9

10

11 D. Flagellates: Euglena
Single-celled 15 – 500 micrometers Contain nucleus, chloroplast, contractile vacuole, stigma (eyespot), one or more flagella Pellicle: wall allowing for change in shape Also absorption of food photosynthesis

12

13

14

15 E. Volvox Pond alga Spherical colonies 1000-3000 cells per Volvox
Flagella 1 mm in diameter (width) Found in ponds, puddles Absorb food through cell surface Photosynthesis
