Year 9 GCSE History Lesson November, November, 2018 Building Castles Learning Gain: All learners will explore the significance of castles in Norman England. Today we will: Today’s Learning Muscle Investigate the key features of castles Consider the uses and purpose of castles in the time period Explain how castles played a role in helping William to maintain control of England.

2 In 5 minutes, design what you think a castle should look like.

3 Write down anything in GREEN.
Castles were key to the way William established control over England. It is estimated that 500 were built during his reign. Castles had previously been almost unknown in England, so this was a major change for the country. From the time he invaded, William used castles to increase his power.

4 Group Task Using the resources provided, label the key features of a motte and bailey castle.

5 Main Task Why did William the Conqueror build so many castles? What was their purpose? Multi-structural Define and explain the historical significance of motte & bailey castles.
