1 Ionic Bonds Main Concept:
Ionic bonding results from the net attraction between oppositely charged ions, closely packed together in a crystal lattice.

2 Ionic Bonding Ionic Bonds What they are / How they’re structured
Coulomb’s Law and Strength of Ionic Bonds 1. What and Why 2. What and Why

3 - cations and anions in ionic crystals are arranged in a systematic, periodic 3-D array
- This maximizes attractive forces among cations and anions while minimizing repulsive forces

4 - Often between metals and nonmetals
- Involve the giving and taking of electrons

5 - Coulomb’s law describes force of attraction the cations and anions in ionic crystals
- larger charges lead to stronger interactions b/c force is proportional to the charge on each ion - smaller ions lead to stronger interactions b/c force is inversely proportional to square of distance between the centers of the ions (nuclei)
