Starter: What is this model called? What does it show? Can you relate the changes shown in this model to Ulverston? Employment doesn’t just vary according to sector, the type of employment can also be recognised (e.g. part-time / full-time, temporary / permanent, employed / self-employed).

Lesson Objective: To understand how economic activity varies, by comparing Ulverston and Salford Quays using economic and social data.

Using the interactive map and data chooser, find the percentages for the economic and social indicators listed (Pair up – one person can find the data for ‘Ulverston Town’ and the other can find the data for ‘Ordsall’), you can then share this data to save time. Once you have found the all of the data for both Salford Quays and Ulverston, answer the summary questions to compare the two places. Read the background information at the back of your handout about changing economic activity in the UK, and compare Salford Quays and Ulverston to the national picture. Note the potential exam question, you need to have a good knowledge of the economic and social factors in our local place (Ulverston), and our contrasting place (Salford Quays). Make sure you have figures to back this up too.
