24 Overview What is Integrated Student Supports
Developing the WISSP: What did we learn? Overview of the WISSP Next steps OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION

25 According to Child Trends, a national child, youth, and family research organization:
“Integrated Student Supports (ISS) are a school- based approach to promoting students’ academic success by developing or securing and coordinating supports that target academic and non-academic barriers to achievement” (Child Trends, 2014).

26 Child Trends Factors and Outcomes
SEL development Career and College Positive Behavior Sports and Rec Arts The theory of change is aligned with Child/Youth Development Theory Child- centered approach – not school centered Life course perspective – what happens early - effects what happens later on Positive youth development approach – positive relationships, goals Whole Child perspective – Health, emotional development and behavior are all important not just academic outcomes And Ecological theory – sees the child’s context as critical influences The WISSP is based both in what Child Trends is learning about ISS models, our legislation and what some Washington schools, districts, ESDs, families and community based organization are already doing well.
